So, a lot of surf of late, and with it crowded line-ups. Seeking opinions on the standard of etiquette in the following scenario...
A 3-wave set comes and the guy in position paddles for the 1st 2 waves, but doesn't catch either. The guy next to him could have caught either, but yielded to the guy in position. The 3rd wave comes and both paddle for and catch the wave. Did the guy next to the guy in position burn him, or did the guy forfeit his "priority" position by paddling for, but not catching the 1st 2 waves of the set? A slight caveat...does it change if the 2 are friends?Asking for a friend as there was a little hard feelings involved, LOL

Take a number. Miss your turn? Back of the line. I am with long beard on this one. Usually when one paddles for a wave he is now a few paddles and seconds out of position if he misses the wave and now that position gets assumed by the next person. Caveat for beginners or he who hesitates to send it: You miss a wave too many times you will get marked and people will start to burn you assuming that you're going to miss another good wave. If they are true surfer they will understand that no one in the lineup wants to see a good wave go unridden. Lol ------------------------- Time and tide wait for no one..... |

stisfn1 and Plan B 99.99% alone because it is just as good at the end of my street as it is a half mile north or south where everyone goes, plus the vibe is better. I don't travel up and down the coast looking for surf when there are waves right in front of me.

I surf alone. In crappier waves? The smaller the surf, the more desire I have to surf without people..... when it's pumping the ocean usually takes care of business If its just clownshoes longboard waves then it really doesnt matter either way I'll swap empty shoulder high for crowded overhead any day. ------------------------- I was right. |

You should actually burn him once just to give him shit since he got bent out of shape.

This isn't Tee-ball.
If the first guy isn't getting into the waves and the second guy could after giving the first guy a few chances, I say go for it. The first guy should realize he is blowing waves for others and be understanding. Having said that when surfing with friends usually sharing waves is fine, as is hassling each other for being corks or wave hogs. ------------------------- If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD WAS MUSIC - KV Edited: 09/11/2021 at 05:20 AM by Bamboo |

If you blow 2 in a row, you can't get bent when anybody else paddles for the 3rd ..... friends or not.

If the guy in position paddles for and misses the first wave, he is out of position for the second one. Second guy assumes position and goes on the second wave. Now the third guy may have a problem because the guy that missed the first wave will of had time to get back in position for the third wave. In that scenario resort to pecking order. Out of towners don't get second chances.

Surf etiquette expired the day Cook "discovered" the "Sandwich Islands". Any wonder that Cook and kuk sound similar...

How many good rides did we all miss from the guy/girl too deep that had no chance at making it, but we were too nice to go in front of him?

Sometimes it helps to look them in the eye and ask firmly, YOU GOT IT?? If they say yes and miss it, they can no longer be trusted LOL

My practice, too. Be paddling and asking if they have it. Any hesitation in their answer, be ready to GO.
