Thinking about growing some edibles using this method again. I used it in CA and we had more fresh food than we could eat. I think it could be a bit more challenging here. Probably need some kind of netting.

I built a 4x6 raised bed along the west side of my place, and it keeps us in tomatoes during the season and a host of fresh herbs for cooking. Very low maintenance.
Good quality compost has paid off huge. That's good to know Rusty. Most of the soil sources are suspect for petrochemicals.

This is an easy design for 8ft, even easier if you shorten it to 6. I've built two 8's and one 6, and it's a fun job, just be careful with metal cutting, razor city!
http://communitygardennet.wixs...to-build-a-raised-bed Runs $100 in material, but the main cost is good soil. Having fresh herbs and green onions at the ready for cooking is awesome; plus you can't hardly buy a real tomato anymore. ------------------------- Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system. Great design. It is however a good thing that the deer population has been decimated here on the coast. The design Height would keep deer from getting a neck creak while eating everything.

No deer here but I've lost a couple 'maters to squirrels. Little bastages take a few bites and that's it. I'd rather they take the whole fruit if they're hungry. Wife says we have to share.

It may be advantages to use shade screen On 5 sides to limit leaf burn and to make it a bit more difficult for critters to access. Having boxes to attach a frame to will make that easier to accomplish.

If you made it height adjustable you could fine tune it for seasons - more shade summer, less winter. Damn good idea, thanks.

Yes thx, sun Angle is critical. Apparently red-leaf Lettuce needs less sun light. So, adjustability is a great idea. Thx!
