Glock 17 for full size grip; 19, 26, 43x or 43 for carry. I prefer Gen 4. Extremely easy to completely disassemble and parts are available. Put the time in to get used to the trigger. Dry firing is very beneficial

I like my M&P 2.0. It took a couple of boxes to recalibrate after I added the laser sighting, but Even with that it's easily and comfortably carried.

I don't carry because I am protecting the world from me. lol

Guns make people bigger than they really are and that's a dangerous combination.

That's funny because that's exactly the way I feel. I was scrolling through this thread thinking "looks like everybody in the world is packing except for me- wtf"

I've never carried a gun, and don't want one within easy reach 99.999% of the time for a million reasons, but basically for the exact reason you said.

I'm protecting the world (and my loved ones, including myself) from me.

Sure it's "possible" a situation could arise where it would be helpful to have one- but for the other 99.99999% of situations, a gun being around would make things much worse.

Just my opinion and life decision.

Green - I have an old kel-tec p32 that has been through the wringer and although ratty looking now it is fully functional and reliable. They have a pocket clip you can add and are hardly any bigger than a pocket knife which makes them super easy to carry. Kel-tec is a good local business and you can take your gun directly to their shop in cocoa if you need to. Danny and the boys are good people. Also have a PF9, and while functional it is wholly unimpressive except for its size.

Johnny mentioned EAA being local, they are but you can't do business with them in person. I tried several times and was told absolutely not, they do everything by phone and mail....no exceptions. I love Tanfo's but hate the service from EAA, although the ladies on the phone are nice.

Ding.. I've been looking at the S&W M&P Shield and there is barely any difference between the 2.0 and Shield other than $$$ from what I read online. If someone on here knows of any upgrades on the 2.0 chime in because I am on the fence of which one of these to get.

Yup - not sure why everyone is so scared of everything. They make loud sounds and stuff and fun to shoot targets. But if you are walking around with one every day all the time, they you're just a pussy.

And now, Taurus just came out with the G3c; compact version of the G3. Initial reviews are "home run".

Of course they did! I bought the M&P Shield 2.0 which has pretty much zero difference from the previous model, but it was only model in stock. I ordered a conceal holster and have no clue how this is supposed to fit inside my belt line... I don't really plan on conceal carry as much as leaving it in my truck unless I end up in some sketchy area I'll carry.

Can't go wrong with Smith M&P series, but my absolute favorite is the Springfield 1911 RO Elite Compact in 9.

Check out a S&W 929 revolver. Good shooters and fun. The Dan Wesson's punch way above their price point if you want a 1911, and the Springfields and STIs are good too in that 1911 format.

Otherwise nearly any of the plastic guns will do fine.

I am a big fan of the CZ's. I just acquired a Tactical Sport. The pull is literally 1lb 10ozs. There is nothing else like it, except maybe the new improved Tactical Orange. I also love my custom sp 01 custom shadow. I used to think nothing could beat my Sig 229 platinum elite. Cz is a better shooter by far, but not a better carry. I was seriously considering trading my HK Mark 23 for an HK P7 squeeze cocker to make all my range choices 9's but those are hard to come by. The MP is great for the money. The Glocks are ultra reliable but their triggers need to be replaced to be any good. I actually got a 9mm conversion barrel for my 23 to make it a 9. I like that. Ghosted the trigger. Like that more.

As a recommendation: Look at the CZ SP 01. Its about 600. Heavy, 17 shot clip, very reliable and an addictive shooter.

Cheap: Look at an EAA SAR gun or the M&P.

Striker fired; Buy a glock 40 and get the conversion barrel. The mags will fit 9 and 40 and its twofer or look at the CZ P10.

In terms of overall brands and quality, I'm a big fan of CZ, Sig, and Springfield.

For target shooting, I really like the Sig 226, CZ 75D, or a full-size Springfield XDM. I've shot plenty of Glocks and I'm sure they are reliable but they are ugly as shit. I'll go Springfield all day over Glock and Springfields have some much better safety features.

For CCW, I'd lean towards the Sig 938 if you like a 1911 style in smaller form factor or S&W M&P.

Going over the answers I realized you said semi-auto but didn't specify hand or long gun.

If you are looking for something that is easy to shoot and just a truckload of fun, check out some of the pistol caliber carbines (PCC) in 9mm. Palmetto armory has glock and colt mag fed lowers you can make a nice parts-gat from, or buy a built 16" rifle for less than $700, which is cheaper than most of the pistols mentioned above. Very accurate with decent ammo, can be tinker-toyed up if you are into that, or set up for work or competition. Minimal recoil with a different feel than .223. And if you use a 16" barrel you'll gain a couple hundred FPS over a handgun (i.e. fiocchi 115gr fmj chronos about 1200 form a 5" barrel, and about 1425 from a 16" barrel...dang near makes major from the pcc). You can go top tier and get a JP, or go ghetto and make one from the cheap-o parts bin. Best deals I've seen are on the palmetto based parts guns. I have a 16" with a light weight kaw valley barrel (cheap barrel) and get 1" at 50 yards with tailored ammo (coated 135gr SNS with American Select). I've shot a lot of them, and honestly a well sorted cheapo home built will hang with a top tier brand except when it comes to resale.

Have you tried Frog Bones? I know they sold out of everything when all this BS started, but they seem to re stock pretty fast. They never ran out of ammo. I've been looking for a small carry 9MikeMike and Bass pro is out of stock, at least the Palm Bay one is. I'm leaning towards the S&W M&P Shield or the Glock 43. Both are around $300-$400. I m not into dumping a lot of money on something I will most likely never use or show it off to anyone.

The S&W Shield is hard to beat for actual carry, and if you're handy I'd install the Apex Duty/Carry trigger kit.

For pistol caliber carbine style fun and historical interest, check out the Polish import PPS-43C. Mine is planned for an SBR project at some point.

Green,

It must be serendipity!

I was not going to post about it, because I figured that a lot of folks would start dissing Taurus but, , , ,

I did have a chance to talk to a good friend of one of my very good friends about a "carry". He is a full fledged NRA type who, at the convention, has lunch and/or dinner with a NRA board member just about every day.

He told me that as a "price point" that I should seriously look at the Taurus G2c!!! He has one, and I think he said his wife has one too. Not too big of a deal though, he keeps 23 carries in his safe at home!!! He generally buys all of the best, most expensive, weapons.

Not to be a contrarian, and I love a cheap piece for the range, I wouldn't consider a Taurus for carry. I had a TCP back when the micro 380 was all the rage, and it felt cheap and had an awful trigger.

Taurus is great if your life doesn't depend on it.

My wife and I each had a Taurus PT 24/7 Pro (9mikemike). They each got about 500 rounds through them and they were just fine.

I'm going to try to get back with the gun guy and see what he carries for about $200 more than the Tauruses.

Carry something that's comfortable, reliable, and that you shoot well. It may be different for different people.

Exactly. Bigger people and heavy-set people have a lot of options. People with thinner frames have fewer options for firearms or positions to conceal.

I rarely carry these days, with a few exceptions. The walk shorts I typically wear don't lend themselves to it and I'm not wearing heavy clothes in the Florida heat, so I can carry a gun around in a town that has relatively zero crime.

Lots of good info thanks -minus the unsolicited 'I don't own because..'

Just a newbie but I have shot a friend's Diamondback. Felt good, shot well without an issue. Seemed really compact.

Any thoughts on those?

I've been shooting and carrying the original Shield in 9 for several years, and it's my #1 choice for pocket (Desantis Nemesis) or IWB carry (Crossbreed).

Looks like the 2.0 improved the trigger, I did that with the Apex kit for mine, but it's not an easy install. The rear sight is one there tight and needs more than a basic punch to move.

I just bought a S&W M&P 9mm Shield 2.0 from Cragg Firearms in Indialantic. I completely forgot about this place. They have guns and ammo available. Ding one of the guys that works there carries that same Taurus you bought. The place is pretty small but cool.

There are a bunch of studies on removing lead from hands, and not all of them point to the expensive products as the best. So, doing some research is worth your time.

for example: https://www.researchgate.net/p...emoving_lead_from_skin

I usually use plain old wet-ones or wet-ones citrus after a reloading or shooting session. There was a time when I had BLL over 10 (was in a specific environment with poor air), I now get my BLL checked every year and for the past decade it has been around the 5-8 level. The main thing is to practice good hygiene, don't touch your face or eat with bare hands, and wash hands when done or a couple times throughout the day.

Another cheap cleaner is citrus cleaner spray, use it on your hands, scrub, and rinse with water. A good buddy swears by Zote soap. He has consistently low BLLs too.

BTW - I've seen D-wipes at Ace Hardware for a fair price.

I bag on them but that's not a bad choice. If your comfortable with it. I feel like I too must admit that I rarely carry. I have a very concealable browning black label 380 1911. It's small, light very very accurate and fun to shoot. It gets to the range with me quite a bit, when the range used to be open.

I have a Sig P938 too and bought it for that purpose. I carried it a lot after I bought it but I found carrying to be cumbersome. Not carrying that gun but carrying any gun.

If you are doing it correctly, it adds so many things that you have to think about that you didn't have to before. At this point in my life, I don't need to add any more things I have to do each day. On long car trips, sometimes I like to have it on me because I like to travel late at night and early in the morning.

Snip, concur. I started to think anything I could carry, would either not have enough stopping power or that I would just be out gunned without more magazine capacity. I mostly just have it in a safe in my truck.

And that is the balance every person has to decide for themselves.

If you are walking into a firefight with a handgun you are already in trouble. The main purpose of a handgun is to defend yourself at close range to either (hopefully) stop a fight or delay it until you can get to a real rifle/shotgun. (paraphrased from Col. Jeff Cooper of Gunsite) Stopping power is only part of the equation. A lot of people have been killed with 22LR. What I would carry in the western states is not what I would carry in Florida.

This is an interesting perspective, again from Col. Cooper:
"It has never been clear to me why increased magazine capacity in a defensive pistol is particularly choice. The bigger the magazine the bigger the gun, and the bigger the gun the harder it is to get hold of for people with small hands. And what, pray, does one need all those rounds for? How many lethal antagonists do you think you are going to be able to handle? Once when Bruce Nelson was asked by a suspect if the thirteen-round magazine in the P35 was not a big advantage, Bruce's answer was, "Well, yes, if you plan to miss a lot." The highest score I know of at this time achieved by one man against a group of armed adversaries was recorded in (of all places) the Ivory Coast! There, some years ago, a graduate student of mine laid out five goblins, with four dead and one totaled for the hospital. Of course there is the episode of Alvin York and his eight, but there is some dispute about that tale. (If you read it over very carefully you will see what I mean.) Be that as it may, I see no real need for a double column magazine. It is all the rage, of course, and like dual air bags, it is a popular current sales gimmick."

I went through Gunsite courses when he was still there. He was certainly a no-shit guy, and a great teacher. Carrying is a personal choice and the only wrong answer is to not spend the time to become truly proficient and comfortable with whatever you choose.
There are other options like CS spray or a stun gun. I've been maced (as part of a class) and it is pretty hideous stuff. Very handy and can be used on a dog without real harm.

I was out plinking today and I was reminded to suggest something I just added to the range bag recently but I really like - lead-off wipes. Like a can of baby wipes, but treated with a lead removing chemical. I wipe my hands down real good right after shooting. Highly recomend. Smell nice too.

Rusty,

Yes, wipes for lead. Just another one of those "Really?" things but, if you are one to pooh-pooh such a thing, , , , ,: I guess that you are comfortable with casually finding out what your tolerance to lead is?!

I had the 938. I traded it for the browning black label 380. It was the the most accurate of all the small 9's. The black label browning 380 is crazy accurate. That's the trade off for the smaller round.

The M&P Shield pocket carries well in Tru-Spec shorts with Nemesis holster, or as my kids say "Dad shorts".
