Between those, multiple players booted last season, the inconsistent performances, and KZ transfer, you have to wonder if crap is falling apart there.

Some of it is obviously growing pains for a young program, with the pressure magnified after 2017's perfect season.

They'll have to get some solid, experienced leadership to get on the right track long-term. Too bad the timing occurred so close to soring practice.

I wonder if there's some back-channel talk to get Scott Frost back. He would be a quick fit with his knowledge of the university administration and the football program. Who knows how much longer Nebraska will keep him...

CentoDavo ..... Look on the brightside !!

I am sure that being the outspoken critic of the undue influence of the "Power 5" conferences and their domination of the CFP, that Ol Danny White has been .... he will work very, very hard to correct that ..... now that he left UCF so fast he burned rubber, to a Power 5 school.

I was expecting Danny White to go to duke. His dad just announced his retirement from being the duke ad. Now DW is the highest paid AD in the SEC at 1.8 mil a year. He got a 800,000 raise. Wowsa.

Randy Shannon is interim UCf head coach now. New chapter for UCF.

What's the payoff to a school for having a top AD? UCF must have done a cost benefit analysis on paying him more.

It's about $ right?

I think Tennessee is just snake bit. It's just their culture of failure. I don't think they will give him enough time and kick him out too soon.

UCF has not hired a new AD or even mentioned a new head coach yet...But, Orlando Sentinel says we did great in recruiting on National Signing Day:

UCF (A)
What a difference two months makes. The Knights' recruiting class was ranked No. 61 in December, but after the departure of head coach Josh Heupel to Tennessee, in stepped major recruiter Dillon Gabriel. The Knights' sophomore quarterback lured four-star receiver Titus Mokiao-Atimalala from Ewa Beach James Campbell High in Hawaii. The Knights also signed Zyin Thomas of Delray Beach Atlantic on Wednesday and ended up with the No. 55 recruiting class in the country. UCF also already had signed Arizona quarterback Mikey Keene, who is on campus. UCF, which was in the bottom 10 among all FBS teams in defense last season, addressed some needs by adding five defensive backs, four defensive linemen and two linebackers. UCF also addressed the need for more receivers by adding four.

I wish Heupel and White as much success at Tennessee as Scott Frost has enjoyed in Nebraska.

Well, I suppose it is better than dropping to the #67 ranked recruiting class.

UCF offers head football coaching job to Gus Malzahn ...www.orlandosentinel.com

3 mins ago - Malzahn, 55, spent the past eight seasons as coach at Auburn, where he led the Tigers to a 68-35 (60%) overall record and a 39-27 mark in the SEC. He was fired on Dec. 13 following a 6-4 campaign and a third-place finish in the SEC West.

Cast Out of the SEC, Gus Malzahn May Be an Ideal Match for UCF
If the former Auburn coach succeeds big in Orlando, the Tigers (and Tennessee) will be sure to notice.

First game of season, Sept 4th Boise State at UCF. Got tix?

I like UCF's hire. High profile coach with tons of experience and relatively young (55). I think we got the better coach than Auburn and Tennessee does now. But, time will tell.

Go Knights!

Expensive buyout, but maybe time for a change.

https://www.orlandosentinel.co...ypr77v7tupu-story.html

UCF defensive coordinator Randy Shannon's current contract with the Knights runs through 2022 and includes a steep buyout, according to records obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

Shannon signed a two-year deal in February that keeps him under contract through Jan. 31, 2022. The agreement had not previously been reported. If the school were to fire him without cause, UCF would owe him 100% of his $1 million base salary.

UCF is coming off a 6-4 season that saw its defense take a significant step backward. The Knights finished the year ranked No. 123 in total defense out of 127 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision after surrendering 33 points and 491 yards per game. That's down from the previous year when the team was No. 32 in total defense after allowing 23 points and 346 yards per game.

During two of four losses this season, UCF held double-digit leads only to see the Knights disappear after halftime. The loss to BYU in the Boca Raton Bowl was the worst since the team lost to Michigan in 2016.

It's enough to push some in the fan base to call for a change at defensive coordinator.

But the defensive unit suffered a significant amount of attrition in 2020, including losing starting defensive linemen Kalia Davis and Mason Cholewa and defensive back Tay Gowan, who chose to opt out before the season due to coronavirus safety concerns.

Midway through the season, the Knights lost four more starters after dismissing defensive linemen Kenny Turnier and Randy Charlton, linebacker Eric Mitchell and defensive back Antwan Collier following an incident during a traffic stop.

Twelve players earned their first career starts on defense during the 2020 season, led by defensive linemen Josh Celiscar, Tre'Mon Morris-Brash, Cam Goode and Woodson, along with linebackers Tatum Bethune and Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste and defensive backs Justin Hodges, Davonte Brown, Jermaine McMillian, Corey Thornton, Divaad Wilson and Jon Powell.

During Shannon's three seasons as defensive coordinator, the Knights allowed an average of 26.3 points and 423.6 yards per game.

I will give Malzahn and Mohajir this ..... they understand the reality of UCF's current scheduling situation and if they wanna schedule the "Big Boys" ( and get the final 4 respect they want ). they are going to have to start by doing so on terms that are less than perfect for UCF. Danny White stood on some misguided "principle" and in the end ..... it did nothing to help UCF get "final 4" cred.

" Former athletic director Danny White made it a point to talk about playoff expansion repeatedly, but he remained steadfast in his resolve to not settle for terms Power 5 teams offered when it came to nonconference scheduling.

Malzahn and Mohajir signaled a shift away from that philosophy, saying repeatedly they believe there is a way for UCF to make the top 4 as an undefeated team. And one way is to schedule and beat top-10 nonconference opponents. When Mohajir was hired, he indicated he would be open to scheduling Florida if the right opportunity presented itself.

"I'll play out in the parking lot," Malzahn said. "Terry can decide if we're playing at home or on the road, I just want to play them and I want to beat them."

"We're going to do everything in our power as a program to give our guys a chance to do that, and I truly believe we will be in the final four in a short period of time."

Thank You Tennessee for improving UCF coaching staff & for the money.

"Tennessee is now on the hook for more than $10 million in buyouts and/or settlements following Pruitt's ouster. Tennessee is paying Heupel's $3.6 million buyout at UCF along with new athletic director Danny White's $2.5 million buyout at UCF."

Heupel's 3 seasons at UCF: 12-1, 10-3, 6-4, final year with discipline problems and a humiliating bowl loss... the downward trajectory was not good.

Losing a head coach and AD in the same off-season suggests maybe Heupel was not a great fit, or Heupel and White were both encountering friction from the UCF admin.

I guess now was as good a time as any to make a clean break. Maybe Malzahn will get off on the right foot with the administration, and if he can poach any SEC talent, that will be a plus. He's beaten some good SEC teams, including Alabama 3 times in 8 years.

I didn't survey the entire horizon, but who else besides Malzahn would have been a good, realistically available candidate?

Since Malzahn got beat by UCF in the 2016 bowl game, maybe he has some real respect for the potential in Orlando.

Indeed time will tell. Malzahn was on the cutting edge of the uptempo / no huddle offense some years ago (and drove Sabin crazy!! ) .... but defenses and rule changes caught up, Gus failed to evolve and his offenses stagnated.

Bet ya that Heupel would rather play UCF's schedule that an SEC East one.

If one thing Malzhan is better at than Heupel is the press conference. He wins those. Heupel was very boring, tight lipped, not inspirational. Malzhan is definitely more entertaining and engaging.

Score: Malzhan 1 Heupel 0

UCF Football: Gus Malzahn talks after first day of spring practice

I basically stopped listening to Coach Heupel pre and post game interviews as he never said anything but coachspeak, blamed lack of execution of the players and basically lost the team last year. I liked Heupel, however, he was slipping. Probably similar Malzhan at Auburn. Defenses caught up, had film study, and Heup would continue to run the same 3 plays. It was so predictible. He is a great coach and hopefully turns Tennessee around and make them respectable again. Just like Scott Frost, wish him the best as well, but the next chapter has begun.

I hope Malzhan has learned from the past. He has mentioned it in media interviews that the 8 weeks he had off he self reflected. Hope it works! Go Knights.

I bumped into a guy today whose son played at UCF under both Frost and Heupel. Conversation too long to re-create here, but from his semi-insider perspective, he thinks Malzahn is a good catch and a good fit.

Both Malzahn and Heupel will be gone from UCF & Tenn in 3-5 years.
Malzahn to greener pasures and more $$$$
Heupel down to non "power 5" conference school or perhaps a coordinator position.

The dad I spoke with cited continuity as an issue; those recruited under Frost and those recruited under Heupel never really quite gelled with each other.

If you can get 5 years out of a coach, you can take one player from redshirt thru senior year, and develop a program around one stable philosophy.

If Malzahn can last that long and have successful seasons (including some high-profile games against Power-5 teams, either by bowls or by deliberate scheduling), he will have done his job. UCF might be ready to join a tougher conference and lure another high-profile coach by then.

The dad mentioned Malzahn's $21M severance from Auburn and his interest in having grandkids come to Orlando as reasons he might stay longer, or at least not need to go anywhere else. But Malzahn is still young enough to get "the itch" and go to those greener pastures. We'll just have to wait and see. I don't think UCF could have done any better this cycle.

"Malzahn to greener pasures and more $$$$"

That would mean he was successful at UCF then. Buckle UP for the next 3-5 years!

reported that season tix sales have gone up since hiring Malzhan. April 10th is UCF spring game. 25% capacity. Although my past spring game attendance and its kind of boring to watch I may go if schedule allows. Its nice to have college football in our backyard and accessible!

Bounce-back teams in college football: How these six programs can re-emerge as contenders in 2021 season
2020 wasn't kind to every team, but there are reasons for optimism for this group in 2021
By Ben Kercheval

UCF
Of the teams listed, UCF is the only one that finished above .500 in 2020. So what's the problem? Let's just put it this way: how many Knights fans were disappointed when coach Josh Heupel left for Tennessee? Going 6-4 in a pandemic year isn't the end of the world, but it's harder to swallow when you won 35 games in the three seasons prior. Notably, UCF's defense took a big step back, and there were stretches of games in which the Knights failed to put opponents away. With the arrival of new coach Gus Malzahn, here's how UCF can get back into the New Year's Six conversation in 2021:

Find RB1: Malzahn's offenses run at their best when they have a 1,000-yard workhorse. The Tre Masons, Cameron Artis-Paynes and Kerryon Johnsons of the world make those offenses hum. UCF hasn't had that type of productive back in years outside of Greg McCrae. What's more is that McCrae and Otis Anderson, the top two backs from last year, are gone. Who steps in? Bentavious Thompson is the most experienced, but the RB1 job is up for grabs.

Overhaul the defense: This was a talking point of Malzahn's at his introductory press conference, and it's not hard to figure out why. After fielding some of the AAC's better defenses over the past few years, the Knights took a massive step back on that side of the ball in 2020, allowing 33 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. They were also one of the worst teams in the conference at giving up big plays of 20 yards or more. New defensive coordinator Travis Williams comes as a highly-respected recruiter and talent developer. The latter may be more important in the immediate future with some notable transfers like Big Kat Bryant coming in from Auburn to help the pass rush.

I found it interesting that Malzahn wrote and published a book about the No-Huddle, Hurry-Up Offense philosophy in 2003, while he was still coaching at the high-school level:

Like I said earlier .... he was on the forefront of this type of offensive. Then D's and the rules caught up and he didn't evolve. UCF best hope he has found his mojo.

Look at you two with all your fancy cliche' and such. . Maybe save that for ballerinas...this is football...You can get on the Gus Bus or remain hater-trolls. That is fine...how is your team's spring practice going? I like the renewed energy I've been reading about. Proof is in the pudding of course, we will find out soon enough if UCF is for real or not. Cincinnati probably gonna be the team to beat in the American Conference next year. I like having a coach and team that have a chip on their shoulder and chasing it, rather than resting on their laurels. Cliche city!

Good grief CentoDavo ...your continually equating anything less than total blind loyalty with being a "hater" is just fucking comical ... in a sad kinda way.

Putting this Mike Bianci article here to reexamine in 3 or 4 years...

Will Josh Heupel, like Scott Frost, regret leaving UCF? | Commentary
Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel 13 hrs ago

HOOVER, Ala. - Here's hoping in four years that former UCF coach Josh Heupel doesn't end up like former UCF coach Scott Frost.

Doesn't look like it should be a huge deal

But if the Huskers do not show serious improvement in the ol w&l's this season, it could very well be the final broken straw for Scotty.

"He is under contract with Nebraska through 2026, and his current buyout is $20 million."

Wonder if that buy out is voided if breaks ncaa rules. Otherwise he ain't going anywhere. Although Auburn did afford 21 million to buy out Malzhan. Nebraska is probably that rich also.

This thread continues to entertain me and I keep coming back.

There is a path for Tennessee to get above six victories. I cannot believe all those transfers will not make a difference but I also can't believe that they will ever have an explosive offense. I have been wrong about son many other things and this declaration might just add to that but i just can't see it.
