Thanks for the "Florida" suggestion, I was not thinking about having it properly "vented"!!

Going to be looking at Resistol and Stetson at the Boot Barn in downtown Nashville tomorrow afternoon.

Last time I was downtown in Jackson Hole I almost bought a new hat, but don't really wear one in florida.
As johnny said Resistol is the core hat for non tourists or showboaters. Stetson makes good hats, though. There are other brands too. Ask the shop while you are there.
Also, a good hat shop will work with you and steam / fit the hat before you leave. Makes all the difference in looks and fit.

Good luck and enjoy!

The cow hunters I see wear those floppy looking leather hats from the original Florida settler days.

Still have my early 80s Resistol 6x beaver. Haven't found much use for it. Had a Stetson, but chucked it. My first Wyoming town was more into trucker caps and odd winter things; Cody did western hats partly because there was a successful retailer (across the street from where I lived) and of course there was a longstanding desire to look western. Even if my shirts were from K-mart. The various summer hats have been standard wear all over for a long time. Used to be made from "Panama" fiber from the leaves of a palm-like Ecuador plant, but I think the stuff used today is all synthetic.

10X Shantung Straw

Shantung Straw Cowboy Hat Information

Since the first use of Shantung (aka Shantung Panama) to make hats, the material remains widely a mystery. Many people believe that shantung hats are made of natural straw. It is actually made out of a high performance paper which is rolled into a yarn to imitate straw. Furthermore, many people believe that shantung paper yarn is made out of rice paper. Rice paper is actually a misnomer. Currently, there are no papers being made out of rice. Although, for the size papers made out of Kozo, Gampi and Mitsumata, rice starch was traditionally used. (This is probabaly where the name "rice paper" comes from.) Kozo, Gampi and Mitsumata were originally used to make the high performance paper. The paper was named "Washi" by the Japanese who perfected the technique in 610 AD after Korean Buddhist monks learned the Chinese technique and introduced it to Japan. (The Chinese invented the technique of making this paper during the first century.)

Washi literally meaning "Japanese Paper," became famous worldwide for it's unique characteristics. Washi is thinner and lighter in weight yet stronger than any other paper. In recent years, because of quantity, availability, and tensile strength, washi is now mainly being produced with the Manila Hemp plant. (Musa Textilis, Abaca) The Manila Hemp plant is native to the Philippine Islands, but it can also be found in other parts of the world. (ie. Central America, Indonesia, Australia, Borneo, etc.) The majority of the world's production still remains largely in the Philippine Islands.

In the mid-1900's, natural panama straw became scarce and hat manufacturer were in desperate need of finding a replacement. Washi was then introduced as an alternative and was perfect for making hats. Wanting a better name for the hat industry, "Washi" was renamed to "Shantung Panama". It quickly became widely accepted because of its similarity in looks to the natural panama straw. It was also very durable, light weight, and cost effective. Today, cowboy hat manufacturers mainly use shantung to make hats. Shantung hats now command more than 65% of the hat market.

"How did the hat buying experience go?"

First off, I found that a size "X" from one brand can be way different from the same size of another brand. I had measured my head prior and would have said that I was a size 7. Nope, not really.

A Cody James "7" just sat on the top of my head, no way was it going to fit, while another brand did "fit" but was tight as hell.

So, moved up to trying 7 1/8. Hmmmmm. Some were still fairly "tight", while others were too loose!!??.

The Stetson I settled on is a 7 1/8 but, the guy at the Boot Barn had to put a foam shim under the sweat band. Fits just fine. The Stetson 7's were too tight!!??

So, the lesson is that you should not order a cowboy hat online unless you are very sure of its fit.

I got a 3x beaver from my dad's collection when the fam moved to Utah. I also got a wide brim straw(ish) stetson I wore constantly in the hot months while working on the roofs. My sweat finally made it fall apart after 7 years.
