http://www.cnn.com/2020/04/06/...zier-modly/index.html

"The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly blasted the now ousted commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as "stupid" in an address to the ship's crew Monday morning, in remarks obtained by CNN.

Modly told the crew that their former commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, was either "too naive or too stupid" to be in command or that he intentionally leaked to the media a memo in which he warned about coronavirus spreading aboard the aircraft carrier and urged action to save his sailors."

...A defense official familiar with Modly's remarks offered his opinion of Modly's address, saying the acting secretary "should be fired. I don't know how he survives this day."
As of Monday, 173 of the ship's crew have now tested positive for coronavirus and 61% of the crew have been tested, according to a Navy official.

Considering that he is an Annapolis grad and was an officer in the Navy I'm surprised he thought that was a good message to give to the crew.
Unless he was actually addressing an audience of one.

He actually deserves his punishment as he broke the chain of command. However, he is a hero. Heroes don't always follow rules. It is a really sad situation. Military and war was the inspiration for term catch 22 after all.

One that wants to save his crew. What 'enemy' was going to attack them?

Crozier apparently was stupid and richly deserved to be relieved of his command. That sort of thing really does endanger our country.

Jack a$$ move by the acting twitler appointee. He called the Captain's regard for his crew stupid... to the crew. Special kind of a-holes working for twitler.

I think Crozier was desperate and acted like it with a desperate move. I agree with hap. He violated the chain of command and he is a hero for doing so. This is what Martin Luther King had to explain to his people. He loved the law so much that when he saw a bad law and decided to break it, he knew he had to suffer the sentence for breaking that bad law as if it were a good law. Crozier will suffer professionally for sure. His storied career is done. He knew that when he decided to sacrifice that for his sailors lives. That is exactly what a hero does. His crew cheered him off as he was removed and even if the world views this through whatever perspective their politics enjoys, those men and women sailors know that this sacrifice saved lives.

Another great response from Jim Wright:

The Acting Secretary of the Navy, Thomas Modly -- whose sum total qualification for his job was that he was once a junior helicopter pilot who became an investment banker and Trump campaign donor -- visited the USS Theodore Roosevelt this morning and chasitized the crew over the ship's announcing system.

He called Captain Crozier "too stupid or too naive to be a commanding officer of a ship like this."

That's right. The US Navy Secretary, told the crew of a stricken warship that their Commanding Officer -- and you'd have to understand the DECADES of work, experience, education, and determination it takes to become the Commanding Officer of a US Navy Aircraft Carrier -- was too stupid and too naive to be their Commanding Officer.

Too stupid and too naive, because he stood up for them.

Modly literally made that announcement over the ship's 1MC (the general announcing system) to the very crew who Crozier had sacrificed his career for.

I can't imagine the staggering arrogance it takes to do something like this.

Modly went on to say Captain Crozier had somehow betrayed not only the Trump Administration, and Modly personally, but also them, the crew.

Modly: "So think about that when you cheer the man off the ship who exposed you to that. I understand you love the guy. It's good that you love him. But you're not required to love him."

Can you imagine saying THAT to the crew of a warship whose Captain sacrificed his career for their lives?

This is the epitome of the Trump Administration, of modern Republicanism, right here. The staggering arrogance of unqualified fools.

Modly was especially outraged the media reported Captain Crozier's concerns to the American people -- and his comments DIRECTLY implied the Trump Administration's repeated message that the media -- one of the very institutions called out BY NAME in the US Constitution and thus the very thing those Sailors are sworn to defend with their lives -- is the enemy of America.

Modly: "Crew of the Teddy Roosevelt. you are no obligation to love your leadership, only to respect it. You are under no obligation to like your job, only to do it. You are under no obligation, you are under no obligation, to expect anything from leaders other than they will treat you fairly and put the mission of the ship first. Because it is the mission of the ship that matters."

And there it is.

THERE it is.

Right there.

Exactly as I told you, in his own words.

YOU don't matter.

YOU shouldn't expect anything from your leaders.

The MISSION comes first.

And the mission is to die heroically and not make the civilians look bad.

I fucking told you.

On the deckplates -- and whatever the proper term is in the other services -- sure, the NCOs and the Officers might put their people first. That's what we tell ourselves, anyway. But once you get to the Pentagon, once you get to the politicians in charge, PEOPLE. DO. NOT. MATTER.

They can always get more people.

If people actually mattered, there wouldn't be a black marble wall stretching across the Washington Mall with 58,000 names on it -- lost to political adventurism and the folly of rich think-tank whiz kids who believed that war was about spreadsheets and were willing to throw just as many American bodies at it as was necessary to prove the size of their president's dick.

I fucking TOLD you so.

And there it is in Modly's own words. You don't have to like it. You just have to do it. And don't expect anything from your leaders, because we don't owe you anything.

But, even that bit about the mission coming first is a lie.

What comes FIRST, is politics.

That's Modly's complaint in his own words. You made me look bad. You made the Navy look bad. You made Trump look bad. And for that, you'll pay.

Modly: "I cannot control or attempt to change whatever anger you have with for relieving your beloved CO. If I could offer you a glimpse of the level of hatred and pure evil that has been thrown my way, my family's way over this decision, I would."

Predictable as clockwork.

YOU should die without complaint.

ME, well, man, you don't know how hard I got it.

Modly, telling the crew of a sticken warship, men and women that may die due to failures of Modly's own leadership, that he, Modly, is the real victim. They should feel sorry for him, you see. He's getting some hate mail. People are saying mean things about him. That's way worse than dying of some disease.

"It's not about me," Modly continued. Oh, really? Then why bring it up? Those sailors, Captain Crozier (who has himself now tested positive for the virus), THEY all have families too. But Modly didn't mention THEM. Just himself.

And just in case you doubt me, case you doubt this was nothing more than a campaign stop, Modly continued: "The former Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, suggested just yesterday that my decision was criminal. I assure you that it was not."

Yeah.

It's not about politics, but lemme just get in a dig about Trump's chief political rival. Sure. Totally not about politics though.

Modly finished with: "I understand that you may be angry with me for the rest of your lives. I guarantee that you won't be alone. Being angry is not your duty. Your duty is to each other, to this ship, and to the nation that built it for you to protect them."

Your duty is to each other -- well, okay, maybe not EVERYBODY on the ship. You duty isn't to the Captain who felt HIS duty was to YOU first and foremost. No. Not that. But, you know, to each other, sure, so long as the other guy doesn't make Trump look bad. We good? Okay.

Your duty is to the nation, right? So long as you don't embarrass that nation by dying publically, because then fuck you.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, had it right all those years ago. Yours is not to reason why, yours is to but do and die.

Into the Valley of Death.

And THAT is the only truth of military service.

Ummmmm, , , , The Captain should have pushed as hard as possible but, ONLY up his chain of command. He should have NEVER made it "public". A Commander who would be in a position to knowingly send his subordinates to their deaths in combat knows better. He let the world know that his ship, a vital technical and strategic combat asset, was compromised. In an instance like this, the condition of the crew would be a highly held SECRET. He broke a lot of rules.

That's assuming his chain was legit. I highly doubt this "acting" navy sec that insults a commander publicly to a crew would be willing to listen to the situation at hand. You think he did this willy nilly? It was calculated. He weighed his options and scenarios, no doubt. He wasn't stupid and he saved lives.

"saved lives" has not much weight in this. Again, he openly revealed that a Very Critical and Vital U.S. Navy combat asset had been compromised. And, again, the condition of the crew in such instances would be a very closely held Top Secret. He certainly knew better than to do what he did.

I'm sorry that this is in direct conflict with your My Little Pony world view.

Some folks, when they see a grenade about to kill their brothers in arms, jump on it.

Lesser men run away.

And then there are those who are not men at all, were never there in the first place because they've been in hiding all along. Tpap and Capn Bonespurs come to mind.

"openly revealed"?

No one has stated how the info was leaked. It could have been by someone in the twitler circle so they could fire the Captain. Or is that too smart for a twitler supporter to do/fathom? Indeed we have a trump appointee doing the dirty work of firing and then calling the Captain stupid to his sailors.

ding sold on the good of the twitler administration, a solid supporter.

I hope every high school senior who's thinking about the military things very carefully about cases like this BEFORE they get themselves into a situation like those sick kids.

Sorry kids, if you think your leaders give a shit about you, might as well stay home and play with your little ponies. They want kids who will do with they're told and die quietly so as not to hurt business.

I love the military and the time I spent serving. However, I'm very glad I served during wise leadership. Trump is not someone I would want to serve under, nor his "acting" lackeys.

Poor Rusty, he just does not get it. "War" as such, has been and always will be like this. You Take the Oath, you receive your orders, you "run the Flag up the pole", and then you perform your mission. That is how it is down.

Nope, don't get it, don't want it.

I feel bad for the kids who fall for it. Enjoy your Lowes discount and free ice cream in November.

I read comments from another naval officer who had served with him and knew him well, that the Captain would not have gone this route w/o first trying the official channels and chain of command.

His supposition was that the chain of command failed.

The fact that it got out into the wild makes the USN administration look worse, and that could explain some of the retribution.

Thanks for confirming. This was my guess. Someone with that much to lose does not make rash decisions. It was a calculated last resort.

I'd rather that not be taken as "confirmation."

I can't find the original article or the officer's name, and I don't recall if the officer making that comment based it on a personal conversation with Crozier about the letter, or just based on what he knew of Crozier's character and modus operandi based on past experience with him.

Some in the USN chain are saying Crozier panicked. Others are saying he saw response to his initial concerns as moving too slowly.

Lots of unconfirmed info out there, so take this input of mine with a grain of salt.

If anyone else stumbles across an article like the one I originally referenced, please post.

On having been told that you are "expendable" !!!!

Combat Arms

In December 1972 I was drafted and sent to Fort Knox for Basic Training, then on to "school" to learn how to be a "company clerk". I was trained and then sent to Fort Hood in April 1973 to join Company A, 1st Battalion of the 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. The 5th Cavalry was an Airmobile unit that was called "Alpha Rangers", it was not an actual Ranger unit. It was "Alpha Rangers" due to the fact that when The Cav stood down in Vietnam and redeployed to Ft, Hood in 1971, Company A, 1/5, was reconstituted as a special unit wherein all of the Officers and senior NCOs were Rangers or Green Berets who had served many tours in Vietnam (many had "maxed" the 4 tour limit). Many of the enlisted personnel had served with A Company in Viet Nam at various times. Within Third Corps/FORSCOM standing orders were that Company A Had Already Volunteered! Company A was the direct descendant of the Army's first, original, Cavalry unit so, and as such, it had Very High Visibility. For a Hippy Surfer from Satellite Beach it was a real TRIP (although my father had been a Marine DI so I certainly "knew the drill").

Anyway, to get to the point, , , , of being told point blank that you probably would be sacrificed, , , ,!!!

Our Brigade of three Battalions (1/5, 2/7, 1/8) was President Nixon's "Ready Reaction Force" and, as such, we were ready to deploy at a moments notice. So, , , , ,

In the very early morning hours of October 6th, 1973, the "Call" came in. The Arabs had attacked Israel! The Ready Reaction Force had been called up and we were to immediately proceed to battle. We were woke up about 2AM and were not told anything other than to grab our "ready bags", draw our weapons and get to the Brigade LZ. I was designated as the XO's RTO (radio) that night. So, we have not been told much of anything other than the phones had been cut and that we would not try to contact any of out family or friends. Lots of guys pretty much thought that it was a drill and that we would stand at attention, get inspected, and then march off to the chow hall for breakfast. NOPE! Word began to spread that this looked like the Real Thing and that people had heard about the attack on Israel! There actually were more than a few "Bros" who verbally objected to going over there to kill their Muslim brothers! Anyway, things got really, really, Bone Fooking Real when our armorer showed up with a truck full of live ammo! 5.56, belted 7.62, 45, LAWS rockets, grenades, Claymore mines, etc., , , , the Whole Fooking Three Rings of the Circus. What really got the XO's attention was the fact that the Armorer told him that everybody was to draw ammo and "load up" with all of their normal "combat load out". WHAT!? WTF are you saying. Sir, all of the Troopers are to draw their ammo and load their magazines. Everybody that should will get grenades and LAWS rockets, etc. WTF??!!??!!??. The XO dragged me behind him with the radio's hand set while he rushed over to were all of the Commanders were talking (the Commander of the Third Corps down to all of the Company Commanders). When we got to them they all were pretty much in a ROAR! The Troopers were to get onto aircraft with loaded magazines, live grenades, LAWS, etc. . . . on their fooking persons!!?? WTF??!!?? But, Sir you do not give troops live ammo on a C-5!! The Commanding General of the Third Cops summed it all up for them (to paraphrase, , , ,): "Yes live ammo, the situation in Israel (at that time) is DIRE and we have been ordered to join the battle. We will have air cover but, we probably will be going in "HOT". We will do everything in our power to help Israel until more of our forces can get there." "Sir, where are we going to land?" "Don't know and that is not important at this time. We will do our duty and comply with the Orders of the President" "If the situation is so bad, how do they expect us to sneak up on anybody and land hot in C-5s?" "That may be the case but we will perform our Duty to the End!" It was so very unpleasant to see the looks on the faces of all of the combat hardened Rangers and Green Berets. As we were loading up into "deuce and a halfs" to head to the airfield it was Called OFF! The Israelis had finally begun to Kick Total Ass on the Arabs. We were to stand by on Highest Alert but no exciting C-5 rides that day.

Ding, what war were these sailors fighting on that ship that they so desperately needed to be staying out there full of covid-19?

Moldy, that motherf&*^r has NO idea what it's like to be aboard a vessel like that, and to have shipmates that you would literally DIE for, or to have an actual leader like Captain Crozier to be honored enough and proud enough to serve. Just because he takes more care of his crew than that orange prick in the WH, doesn't mean he's naive or stupid.

Acting Navy secretary offers to resign over handling of virus-stricken aircraft carrier

Modly submitted his resignation letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Tuesday after meeting with his boss one-on-one, that official said. Neither Esper nor the White House pressured Modly to resign, the official said, and it is unclear whether Esper will accept it.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon did not return requests for comment.

Agreed. Resigning was the least the dipshit could do. He may have been an Annapolis grad but that must have been washed out of him a long time ago. No way it was a good idea to travel 8k miles to give that address.

But being a skipper comes at risk. One of the best Captains I know was Admiral Masted and relieved for something fairly petty. The Admiral was serious, but towards the end he was getting choked up a little too as they were classmates, and shipmates. For some commands it is a 50/50 shot if the skipper is relieved or is able to retire.

Trump, the final say over the military, how fucking scary is that!

"Acting"

Will someone please fire the "acting" POTUS?

What an asshat this Modly guy is.

He fits right in with all the other appointees, except mad dog, Kelly, and McMaster.

But those 3 split ASAP.

Apparently the "asshat" skill set is what it takes to make it past a year in this administration.

Does anyone remember when the "don't tread on me" strict constitutionalists who thought every action of the founding fathers was perfect had so much to say about Obama? They are now the tea bagged party.

The president can't lose the support of the military. Another canon fader Acting Secretary that will have a office on K-Street next week.

But wait.... land lubber becomes acting secretary of the navy. So, there are no Admirals available to become Acting Secretary of the Navy?

But this guy is proof that Trump's loyalists who he places in positions like this will screw up just like this. You might remember that the guy who would have been running this was forced out when Trump forced the nave to reinstate that murderous have seal and give him back his credentials and rank. It's a recipe for disaster.

The funny thing about this story is that the trumpist Navy secretary rushed to fire the captain because he was worried that the captain's leak to the media would enrage trump.

In his haste, he miscalculated the popularity of the captain and gave the crew a trump style dressing down, even using trumpist language. Turns out trump gets triggered by those kind of bad optics and the secretary ended up getting sacked himself. Sacked as in a self tea-bagging of the first order.

The Captain made a choice to save this and every other sailor on that ship. He made his calculations and took his shot to save them. Removed or not, those sailors know who had their back. The rule of leadership is to never ask your troops to do something that you wouldn't do yourself. No one would ask a sailor to die because the President was busy ignoring this problem.
