We are deciding to plant Areka Palms along the fenceline for privacy, and hopefully some future shade. I've seen these to get 15ft tall. We are planting in sandy soil a few blocks from the beach same with the banana trees. I'm known for killing all types of plants. We don't have an irrigation systems and they will be in full sun. Any tips for what soil to use and a watering schedule to keep these alive long enough to root and be self sustainable? (We are hoping to have something that is low maintenance in the longrun)

Thrown in foot or two of good soil at root base
Before planting. Water everyday for two weeks
Until established. Palms are susptible to white flies.
Without irrigation system expect slow growth
unless water weekly. Plant far enough away from building
For future growth.

Banana trees are messy and wasp love them.
Try bamboo, orleanders, hibiscus , jatrophia or bird paradise.

Sector 9, I recommend looking into permaculture. For example planting sweet potato or lemongrass near banana plants will help keep the soil moist and also provide beneficial protection from insects. Sweet potatoes are kicking ass here and are hard to kill they provide nice ground cover and have beautiful flowers..1/2mile from the beach. Good luck.

Once established, 2 or 3 months, Areca can live without any care. Maybe fertilize every so often. But, they are care free weeds. make pretty good fence if planted close together. Bananas are different and need almost daily watering and are not as cold tolerant.

I live about the same distance from the beach in St. A.... but my yard is pretty low (wet) Banana trees go NUTS in my yard. Yes, they do make a mess after winter is through.... but I currently have 4 handles of bananas growing at the moment

Arecas are messy trees. Lots of fruit and boots falling off all the time. Cabadas are a much better but similar if you can find them.

No prob for me with the really tall ones. At some point I will cut the tallest ones down. There's always plenty of maturing pups to keep the area lush and full.

Good luck. I cut down all my area palms. They were houses for snakes rats and all kinds of varmint. Also they were constantly shedding leaves which if you don't pick them up adds to the varmint abodes.

Solution: went with clusias. They grow slow but are much cleaner. Very little leaf drops. Very happy with my choice. My goal was privacy as well.

Another alternative that is closer to a areka Palm is the fox tail palm. Much cleaner and less upkeep. Doesn't offer as much privacy but still some.

Again. I despise arekas. Best thing I did was get rid of them.
