Gardenfest is canceled. No sign of planning for it at this late date. A bit oddly, the even bigger Under the Oaks art show seems to be going ahead for March 12-14.

No Vero Gardenfest this year.

The Melbourne show is happening on Mar. 6th. (formerly FIT show) at US1 & 192

Exotica Tropicals will likely be holding its own sale in Mel Beach around May.

GTC Inc. Of Brevard/ Island Tropical Fruit "may" have our own lychee tree sale as well.

I have 3g trees of the following variety, Mauritius, Brewster, Sweetheart
Probably going to be in the $45.00 range.

I also have some lychee trees in 15g, labels got mixed up, but they are Mauritius, and Sweetheart. They are 4 years old. Probably in the $150.00 range.

Lychee trees DO NOT like salt. They don't like salt on their leaves nor in their water.

That being said, if you live beach side, I don't recommend planting a lychee tree.

If you are wondering if a lychee tree will grow in your area, I tell people, "look around your neighborhood, do you see any XYZ trees?, if not, then there is probably a reason."

Sweetheart typically has a smaller seed than others, and hence is typically more expensive.

I think brevard rare fruit is having their annual sale. I think I saw an email in that regard. they are holding meetings still.

Basically, my expierence with lychee variety.

Brewster: small round and bright red fruit. really good. shy bearer
Mauritius: most planted. bigger red fruit, good producer but can skip a year or two
Hak Ip: Big fruit, prob best tasting. Very simliar to sweetheart. shy bearer.
Sweetheart: Big fruit, great taste. Prob better producer than hak ip, but has been shy for me.
Emperor: large fruit. Gotta age it a little more on tree. different taste. really good. I've eaten them while green and red.
Sweet Clif: small fruit. good producer. Fruit very small actually. small dwarfish tree. tasty.

Be careful at the Searle sale. They are great people and have incredible palms/plants.
The only problem is that most of it won't grow here in Brevard.

I got some great advice 20 years ago from the great "Obi-Wan- Harry Palms"

He said, "When it comes growing a particular palm, don't take any advice from anyone that lives South of you."

For example, take the extreme case, somebody looking to grow a particular palm in Jacksonville, should not take palm growing advice from somebody in Miami.

Also, the official USDA Zones 8, 9, 10 are a very loose guide that don't take micro climates into account, like Merritt Island.

Searle has incredible stuff and it does really well......down in South West Ranches.

Just my $0.02

Well, i have a 2nd house in Sunrise, fl with a blank canvas, and also looking for croton. I'm only looking for understory. I have learned my lesson to not even try the true tropicals like red sealing wax palms, but sometimes you can find one that will grow on the side of an oak tree successfully in the frozen tundra of Merritt Island.

My schedule stopped me from going to Searle Bro sale today, but my son is there and just facetimed me thru the whole nursery. First time plant shopping w/FT! Got a Licauala grandis and some other ornamentals.

Plant sales suck. Somebody demands to go to plant sales rather than paddle and surf.
