I just figured out why my large pineapple palm is failing. After doing some research online it sounds like it has ganoderma butt rot. Anyone ever have an experience with this fungal disease? It says it is fatal and to remove the tree immediately so it does not infect nearby trees. Just wondering how I am going to remove a tree that is about 10 feet around!!! Anyone know someone who removes old palm trees???

Yes, we have experience! Take the palm out and don't plant anything in its place for two years or more. Burn all the remnants of the palm. Epicsurf had the same problem a few years back and it eventually spread to his neighboring Queen palms. Conch mushroom shape things form at the base of the palm and once that is found the palm is all ready dead and in decline. Spreads easily through landscape tools.
Also, pineapple palms, aka Canary Island date palms are notoriously susceptible to this desease. they like dry Mediterreanian climate and Florida is the exact opposite of this. |

Ditto -
I lost a queen ,some Dypsis lutescens and a Spindle Palm to same..... Conchs formed ,end of palm. I will say though - with one of my smaller D.lutescens I chopped off the fungus conch along with the affected trunks and soaked the area with fungicide several different times ..... that particular plant is thriving now. It was about 8 ft tall when I chopped on it..... and it was very isolated from the rest of my palms. Exception to the rule I'm sure.... The Queen (20ft)/ BIG D.lutescens group (15ft) and Spindle (15ft)were all in the same location and transmission from one to another was obvious.... Good luck - When it happened I felt like I had VD or something - almost ashamed to admit I had it.... I'm ok now though....lol |

Thank you CFDave and welertom2. Do you guys know of anyone who can take down a pineapple palm for a decent price? It is not that tall but it is fat.

I just spotted a shroom on one stalk of my cabada, think I can keep it isolated with a fungicide schedule and affected stalk removal? Time to wake up this thread, the palm plague is coming!!!!!

My yard has been hit with ganoderma. Lost a couple pygmie date palms. I think it travels through the roots/soil. But, when the conch appears pretty much the palm is a goner.

Yep, everybody's got it. House next door has dying queen, house across the street has lots of palms infected. So, it will probably spread to my place as well. Queen palms seem to be a real magnet for it.

I think ganoderma is just naturally in our soils. Don't quote me on that. I'd have to google it.
Supposedly the conch is edible. Again, don't quote me on that. Google it! |
