Going to Ventura/Oxnard areas for a few weeks for work..... Where do the locals surf? Where to avoid? And where can I get free parking? haha. Will a 3/2 and booties do it? Any tips on the area appreciated!

I lived there for a fairly long time. There is so much good surf. 3/2 and booties will do you if you are younger. If it gets cold get a cap they aren't much $ and totally worth it. If the 3/2 ain't cutting it get a 4/3 because the surf there is worth it. Also ride a board with a decent volume it will help get waves and get barreled on the points as you can race to the sections and paddle against the currents at some of the spots.

If it's a west swell or big north all the points light up. If it's huge head up Santa Barbara Way for cover but still good Campus Point, El Cap and tons of spots up there. Medium size (huge by our standards) Rincon to C street has at least 10 breaks in that area. I recommend a spot called Pitus point for a bit more barrel than Rincon and slightly less crowd. But you have to surf Rincon it is special. If it's big go up to the north parking lot walk down and paddle out and drift around.

Then if it's OK size you can try the beach breaks from Ventura Rivermouth south to Silver Strand which you can now surf without getting localizsed. The barrels on the beaches are everywhere and this is probably what Oxnard is most known for other than the amazing Mexican food.

You can see all the videos of the area from sand spit to Rincon to the strand. There are so many spots that break on many different conditions, here's video that shows some crummy place lighting up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjK-dPdFH4s

So looking at magicseaweed today Oxnard is getting more swell right now. But don't rule out one star days at Rincon. A locals crummy day there is a stoking day for a Florida person. Magicseaweed is saying Ventura Rivermouth (they call it new jetty) is good today

Driving around there looking for surf is fun. It's absolutely beautiful and my friends say the hills are green like Ireland from the rain. They've had snow on the mountains.

The level of surfer in the area is on point. You can see Dane or Connor Coffin, Kim Mearig, Jack Waterman, Bobby Martinez and just a host of shredders out anywhere you go. They know the spots and are strong paddlers so be patient. The people on the whole are nice too as they get waves all the time. It's better if you are there when the waves have been breaking for a while as the start of swells brings out a higher level and more hungry crowd.

This time of year is really good there. Winter wind is good. Watch after rain moves through the wind often switches for the better.

I'm going to be 100 miles north of there in a few weeks and that is a whole different set of circumstances. Yikes.

Greensleeves is pretty much spot on, most fun was Farias, I would also say McGrath State park is a great place to find empty beach break power (if it is open). Silverstrand's is nice cause you can see your car from the lineup if you are parked down from the jetty. For the truly adventurous type take a big pintail out to Ventura Overhead for that deep water, big wave thrill...3/2? no way...I would be in a 4/3 booties and hood.

Greensleeves nailed it...one of his best pieces of advice IMO is to acquire and ride a board with a little more volume than your FL board, especially this time of year with copious swell and in a wetsuit. I caught C-Street when I was there on a weekday in Feb a couple feet overhead and, for a FL boy regular foot, it was like heaven. Damn I'm jealous...

Little off topic, but not really, if you get time head over to Santa Barbara, it's probably 30 minutes or lesd depending traffic. It's a really cool place worth checking out! At Stearns Wharf you can drive out onto the old school wooden pier and eat (shellfish company is good with reasonable prices) and can park free for up to 2 hours there on the pier as you were like me always looking for free parking... Freaking $20 at lowers forget that

-------------------------

get up early and go surf - it'll make that hangover go away and/or make the workday more tolerable :)

Returned last Wednesday from SLO area north of Ventura. Waves were good. Pumping surf there. It was too big for some of the best spots at least for me. But other spots were working. First time I wore gloves and a hood (with boots and a 4/3). Really helped, no worries about the cold.

Just south of Cayucos beachbreak. Water about 57 and air about same. Really pretty warm for there in winter.
