Garcia : The name of the bus was "Motor Skill " and you did indeed remember correctly ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th6LcuNieFs Complete movie : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lvB86DN-Aw&list=PLuUQ-_me8reY565kW6IIWq9ulOtkwahNw Got the poster framed and on my living room wall , I have over 350 plus ( I quit counting ) examples of Griffin's artwork ( posters , prints ect .. ) , as well as a nice stash of Original Art I managed to acquire over the years , about a Third of which is framed and displayed through out my house ----- I kind of turned it into my own personal museum . MacLaren keeps pestering me to document the collection and put it up on the web . I believe I still have a few extra reprints of the Pacific Vibes Poster that John was kind enough to send me ( Slightly smaller version , but they are signed by Severson ) If I can hunt them up I will send you one . ( PS : Rick died in a motorcycle crash on August the 18th 1991 on the way to a Grateful Dead concert ----so you could say he was a victim of the 90s )

Just a week ago something triggered me to think about this guy, so I googled him and found the link below which shows the classic drawing I replicated off of his original masterpiece in 8th grade. He was the first artist who drew what we only imagined in surfing manuevers. Then came Ke11y Slater who made those moves reality.

Rick Griffin

In this post, I found out that he died so long ago.

Amazing artist, thanks for posting Tom. Would love to see your collection some day.

Randy : There is probably not a school age Surfer during that time frame , that did not re - draw his endless lines on their papers , notebooks and or desks ! I shall indeed eventually invite , you , Cole and Chuck Wofford over to see what I do in fact have . ( Rick was born again in the late 70s and his work reflected that , your piece is from that era . Google : Gospel of john Rick Griffin ) http://www.christiancomicsinternational.org/griffin_pioneer.html

JOESTRUMMER - That would be really, really cool. I would love to see what you have. My vanity plate, which my wife bought me in the 80s as a birthday present, is "DEDHEAD". Give me a PM when you have some time to talk. Regards,

Well, , , , it was not so much Kelly but, Laird and the "Strapped Crew" at Jaws that really made Griffin's surfing a reality.

Hell yes, I'm in.

I had no clue that much of his art still existed, much less in a single collection, much much less right up the street from me.

I was right.

Cole , What I posses is just but a fraction , I say fraction of his work ,Griffin was a EXTREMELY prolific artiest , and produced a huge volume of work . Most of his works have numerous preliminary rough drafts and alternative sketches for each finished piece----so we are talking about an unknown volume of actual art work.

Tom, we cannot wait! I cherished his works and to find out he died so long ago surprised me. I forgot all about him, but he clearly made a huge impact with me.

Ke11y did carving 360's which was his depictions when we were riding clunky single fins. Thank you Simon Anderson!

Local artists of my inspiration: Fred Cheney and Henry Lund!

Mike did a lot of the airbrush work for Lewis and Bruce's Ocean Ave Surfboards and at one point I believe he had a small studio / retail shop in Mel Beach or maybe it was in Indianatlantic ? I always remember him hanging with Jackie , Kechele and the Futch brothers in Melbourne .

Didn't know that. Lost track of him after high school (I was better friends with his brother, Bob) and didn't start seeing him around Sat Bch again until the 90s (maybe?). Live and learn.
