Link doesn't appear to work.
I think of Randy often. He, his brother (Ted) and I all went to church together from the time they moved here (around '64?). I surfed with Randy a lot at Mark Realty. He was super stylish and could tuck into the smallest tube. I have a clear memory of him tucking into a tiny barrel at the top of a pretty good sized wave at outside MR. (I made a carving of it a couple of years ago.) He and Pat Lawler went to Barbados in '73 after Pat and I graduated SHS. I was invited, but, to my everlasting regret, I couldn't go. (I was saving the dough for college.) He was a great surfer and a great guy. |

Soo Floow-eeee.. Those dudes were all shredding! SOO MANY TUBES! super fun to watch man, thanks for sharing I concur! Especially on those thick ol' boards! Slaying those waves with the precision of an Exacto knife with the sword of Excalibur! And some beautiful examples of "RCs Proper" when that left rolls in from the north end and everybody south gets the front row seat. Taking off your telling yourself "Go time! Don't choke" And was the guy at 9:40 in evil knievel undies?! LOL. ------------------------- Time and tide wait for no one..... |

We worked with Jerry to name the surfers in the video. The order may have gotten garbled a bit in editing.

------------------------- "I remember South Africa in the late 70's, sleeping on the beach at J-bay, smoking ganja with the blacks. On weekends we'd go to the pub in East London to drink beer and fight with the Afrikaners. They liked to fight, I liked to fight. It was a good time" |

THE day in 1977 was November 6. The same day Rich Salick was running the NKF contest at what is now known as Slater Way.
RCs was going off. Greg Loehr won the best ride award. Edited: 07/24/2020 at 03:41 PM by rc |

Maybe it's because I was only 14 at this time , but the waves back then just seemed better and more frequent . I remember lots of guys surfing leash less too , it kept you honest , if you kooked out - you had the swim in to think about it .
