Anyone else get tarred up on the beach the last few days? I had specks of tar on my board wax before I noticed a little blob on my foot. Showering off at the pier, another guys was covered in it and then my buddy called and said he stepped in a big blob of tar on the beach.

Must have been a decent size spill in the gulf.

A buddy found a spill tracking buoy off of the Cocoa Beach pier several years ago and we had tar balls for a few weeks after.

The company stiffed him on the reward for sending back the tracker.

Nothing really too big anymore. Way-Back-When in the 50s and 60s the "tar" was REALLY BAD. All the heavy fuel oil was still leaking from all of the shipping that the U Boats sank off the coast during WWII.

right but there is 0 oil off of east florida so its comin from the gulf. all of its on the bottom from the 2010 spill still, plus umpteen other unnamed smaller spills/left and forgotten wells and it gets churned tf up during canes (sally and laura, my bad i forgot about laura, there are TONS of wells and pipelines in both areas, especially in laura's neck of the woods) then flushed out thru the poopstream. it is a living nightmare, pretty much a majority of the gulf seafood we eat is tainted with oil, corexit, and god knows what other chemicals. also there and elsewhere sealife is chopped full of plastic. enjoy earth while it lasts! its gonna be gone! and we did nothing about it! hooray! oldest story ever told! no one listened!

The swell we just had probably busted up a wreck not far from us. Hasn't been enough time for gulf oil to make it here.

I think a lot of stuff happens in the gulf that we have no clue about when it comes to oil and the oil rigs.

Right after the BP total disaster, I was working a surf shop one day a week (surfboards are expensive This guy from Pensacola comes in board shopping..... Said He ran a commercial dive boat and got hired by BP to run guys/ "scientists" out near the spill. He said "If you think the oil is bad, you shopuld see the chemicals they dumped in to hide it!" Instead of actually containing & cleaning the mess. The stuff that caused the oil to sink out view. Out of sight, out of mind.... too bad it will blanket the ocean floor, choking out the bottom end of the food chain. So who knows the true longterm ramifictions, let alone the carcinogens. I havent bought a drop of BP gas since the spill.

Agreed. Shouldve enacted Federal measures immediately, then raked BP over the coals....

Their fines were pretty heavy - the new estimate is more than $65 billion, I'm referring to making it all sink out of sight and the continued lack of oversight.

USA TODAY
Oil washes up along five-mile stretch of Florida beach in wake of Hurricane Sally
Jim Little, Pensacola News Journal
Mon, September 28, 2020, 10:55 AM EDT

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Oil washed up along parts of a five-mile stretch of a beach on Florida's Perdido Key on Saturday, less than two weeks after Hurricane Sally made landfall in the area.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Dustin Williams told the Pensacola News Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, the oil was discovered Saturday, and samples were collected to determine the source of the oil. The Coast Guard investigates reports of oil pollution in U.S. waters.

It's unclear at this point if the submerged oil is from the 2010 oil spill that was stirred up from Hurricane Sally or if it is from another source.

Williams said the Coast Guard will work with the Gulf Islands National Seashore to ensure the pollution is cleaned up.

"We want to get it cleaned up as fast as possible, so we'll be working with the Park Service to make sure that happens," Williams said. "Until we get those test samples back, right now, it's still an unknown source."

Williams said it unknown at this point how much oil washed up but said the estimated shore-line impact was about five miles.

Escambia County Administrator Janice Gilley said the oil looked like tarballs, perhaps from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill were washed up and liquified in the sun.

Gilley said they wouldn't know the source of the oil until the Coast Guard's test results came back.

And those results we will never know.
