There were some spaced out waist+ lines at dawn this morn, low tide, water was warm and clear, sun was blocked by the clouds, offshores, peelin too....def needed to look around for a cooperating sand bar. Saw a nice set roll in as I was leaving, almost went back out LOL. In between sets it's pretty small.

There were literally 500 people at fort pierce inlet waiting for those sets and creating the party wave. Summer is almost here and people are surfing accordingly.

One of the planes performing at the air show had to make an emergency landing in the water around Oclub apparently. Surfers had to sprint paddle to get out of the way

We saw the plane bail on it's routine and head back toward the base. Crazy that it ditched in the surf. The show was a good watch, though somewhat slow.

I thought it was a Grumman Avenger, torpedo bomber. See the guy in the first secs of that clip taking off? That's focus. "What plane? This one's mine!"

Saturday CB Surf Conditions: 2-3' summer waves with an occasional Torpedo Dive Bomber!

Seriously, that was crazy. The pilot made an amazing water landing dodging the people.

He may be the first surfer in history to be dropped in on by a Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber!

And the guy that almost got crushed actually took the wave immediately after. That man needs a beer. From all of us.

Glad the surfer still got the wave, and especially a unique wave on video like that, and that everyone's OK. Not so impressed with the pilot though. It looked like he had a chance to set it down before he got to the crowd, and he certainly could have ditched a little farther outside the lineup. The self-preservation instinct to land in shallow water put a lot more people at risk. I can't tell from the video whether he put down exactly where he wanted to, or if it was simply when he no longer had enough power to remain in flight. Closer call than it needed to be.

Here is some backstory:
I talked with one of the air show pilots who was in the air at the time the Avenger lost it's engine.
He said the Air Boss, the person who communicates and coordinates with the aircraft in the air, told the Avenger pilot he was smoking badly from the exhaust (a sign the engine is burning lots of oil) and should consider aborting the show. In addition a C-47 and another unidentified air show participant pilot that saw the smoke radioed him and told him the same thing. The Avenger pilot probably thought he had enough oil to complete whatever he was doing for the show, but that turned out to be wrong. So, while he made an impressive water landing that was captured on video, several bad decisions lead to that.

If he would have aborted literally 60 seconds earlier he could have make a safe landing at either MI (where they were staging the air show aircraft) or PAFB.

Saw the Avenger on the back of a trailer yesterday being hauled back to Titusville. It looked sad. It is going to take years to rebuild that vintage aircraft after being ditched in the ocean.

I can't believe he put it down as soft as he did. If the whole damn thing could have been avoided, it should have.

His prop was barely spinning when he went over those 2 surfers - that could have ended very badly.. Not sure if he could even see them as he was approaching them and doubt he had much 'control' of the plane at that point - looks like his engine was fully stalled and just barely gliding in.. Dodged that bullet by the skin of his teeth..
