Wetsuits are certainly getting better, but they will never be good enough for me to surf in that cold of water.

I was working out there in the mid-80's (Adak). Rugged beauty like you can't imagine. Bays and points facing all directions with amazing potential, but really hard to access.

Fickle (fierce) winds and not as much fetch as you'd like to get long-period groundswell from, since the wave-generating weather events were relatively local (if not right on top of you).

I didn't get to surf there, but I did roll up my pantlegs once on the black sand beach in a beautiful bay, and waded knee-deep into the deep blue Pacific.

Water was 38 degrees, and I couldn't feel my feet for about an hour after that. DUH!!!
