Wow. Looks like he almost lost his edge a couple of times. Probably just happy not to have eaten it badly. (Could have easily been a hard, awkward down, then up and over with a HARD landing.)

Is that just a bounce or a little pump at the takeoff? "Comeon! Comeon! Down the face!!!" We've all felt that one, admittedly not on anything that size.

His board looks herky-jerky like the old single fins.

I cant believe he paddled in so soon with enough time to make that bottom turn. Also, look how far up on his board he is, I think he's pig dogging a single fin.

Funny you should mention the single fins. I was thinking the same thing. Went to see Five Summer Stories a few years ago, remembering how great it was at the time. Sure looks dated now. Single fins are soooooooo far back on the boards, only a few inches from the tail. All they could do was drop in, turn one time, set the line and get tubed. They sure were good at it (esp Gary and Rory), esp considering their equipment.

Contrast to when guys like Cory Lopez started riding much shorter boards in big barrels like Chopes. I remember staring at a video of the 1996 G-Land contest, when guys were still riding their 7'2" - 7'-6" semi-guns, and being completely blown away. They look kinda stiff (on their turns) in retrospect, but still some amazing surfing.

Amazon has a surf channel and I watched a ton of the old flicks. The one thing I learned is that the boards back in the Day were questionable on the best days, and down right non functional in smaller or disorganized surf.

Greg Loehr once told me (mid-90's, thruster years) if your surfing had gotten into a funk, imprecise, sloppy, or whatever... to go back and ride an old single-fin for a while. Undo some of the old muscle memory, focus on smoothness.

That seems like good advice.

Wow. Beautiful. This is the reason I check the for sale forum every single day.

Centralized wide points make all the difference. Wide points in the first third make for a difficult ride.

I keep daydreaming about having Larry Mayo make me a single fin tube rider in bright red with a white lightning bolt. It's such a specialized board that it would gather dust but I could keep on my wall and just look at it.
