A "flesh eating" Vibrio bacterium is thriving on bits of plastic among the Sargassum. No evident actual threat to people. WESH Orlando

The Florida Atlantic University press release that set off the news stories. It links to the open-access research paper, which emphasizes that these Sargassum-related Vibrio species are not well known, but there is reason to be cautious about harvesting the stuff that comes ashore. Maybe wear gloves when gathering mulch?

Melbeach report for yesterday, massive sargassum! Not the worst I've seen but pretty thick.

Burry's Sargassum Soup, south is either puree or bisque. Surfed north of the Cape today, consomme!

Florida Trend magazine, noting a story Friday in the Miami Herald:
Friday's Afternoon Update What you need to know about Florida today | 6/2/2023
A good seaweed surprise for Florida: Floating mass has actually shrunk, reasons unclear
Florida beaches - and all the people who flock to them - may catch a break from a much-hyped and dreaded onslaught of seaweed this summer. Scientists have spotted a mysterious decline in the 5,000-mile wide seaweed belt floating across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The drop won't be enough to keep beaches seaweed-free, but it did knock back what had been a record-breaking seaweed bloom.
The Herald story must be based on this report from USF. There's been striking, unprecedented decreases in Sargassum coverage, and they suggest that's good news for Florida's east coast.
USF Sargassum May 31.

Bad today. North east wind brought it in.
