I'm hoping to get some advice from the resident CR experts. I plan to meet a friend in Nosara in Feb or March. I live in Melbourne Beach and will be flying into Liberia. 1. What is the best route and airline to get from MLB to Liberia? I can fly out of Orlando if that is the best way to go. 2. What is the surf like @ Nosara? 3. What are the other things to do and see in and around Nosara? 4. Any other random bits of advice? I have been to Costa Rica once before in 1983 and went to Tamarindo and Boca Barranca. I've heard that a lot has changed in the past 40 years. Thank you in advance for any advice!

Fares to Liberia tend to be higher than to San José; it's a resort destination. Orlando should be as good as any airport. Miami has more options to Latin America overall (and certainly to Portugal, a real surfing destination)

Google Flights is an excellent tool for finding fares. For February-March, March is better. I saw one decent deal from Melbourne in March; otherwise $395 from Orlando on American (no doubt without any bags) seems the best

Last time I flew to CR (2021?) I went directly to Liberia on American Airlines. (I think it was from MCO with a brief stop in MIA but no plane change).

It was shortly after American re-classified surfboards as general recreational equipment when going to certain destinations (CR, Hawaii) and dropped the board bag fees.

It was so simple, and far smoother than dealing with JetBlue or Spirit. But... I don't know if that particular baggage policy is still in effect; you'd have to check.

And yeah, CR has changed a bit in 40 years.

Good luck and buen viaje!

American's policy on all kinds of water boards (surf, paddle, body, whatever). It changed effective April last year. Before buying a ticket, check to see if there's any exceptions for Costa Rica. Airlines sometimes add additional restrictions, probably sue to Central America residents shopping in the US or bringing stuff down for friends and family:

Standard checked bag fees of your destination apply up to 50 lbs / 23 kgs.

1 bag or case can contain multiple boards and will count as 1 checked item. Keels, kedges, and / or fins must be removed or properly protected to prevent damage to other bags.

For travel on / after April 17, 2024, standard overweight fee applies over 50lbs/23kgs to 70lbs/32kgs.
