I haven't figured how Jersey can get so large. SE Florida can get size, rarely, thanks to a minimal continental shelf. Maximum size gets smaller to the north, perhaps most minimal in the Sea Island region from Jacksonville to around Myrtle Beach. Buxton NC has narrow continental shelf. NOAA has lots of data but I wonder about finding a good map.

Central Jersey in particular has a coastline devoid of offshore shoals that plague much of the East Coast. So swells arrive unobstructed and explode relatively close to the beach. While Hatteras gets bigger than NJ ..Jersey might get a little hollower
