So, I have had multiple bad things cut off my head, face, hands and whatnot. Grew up 8 houses from A1A and still live that way after college. I use, normally a FCS bucket hat, and it works to well overhead. Costa approved! I do have a hard billed type baseball cap from maybe FCS that also has little flaps for the back or your neck. handy. Used it when necessary.

Best one I ever had was an Oneill lycra head cover with a small bill and lycra chin strap.
It wore out years ago and never saw another. Comfortable, could duck dive, and it never came off. Now use the bucket hats but haven't found one that is really great for me, so am interested in what other recommend, too. ------------------------- If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD WAS MUSIC - KV |

I like https://www.crossensurf.com/ Crossen surf hats. Minimalist design like the discontinued Patagonia hat. You can flip the bill up easily and it fits in your wax pocket when you don't need it.

Thanks for all the info. Now I have to make a decision.
I might get a few different styles and report back. ------------------------- I was right. |

Was in Bealls Outlet, beachside, the one on the south side of Eau Gallie. They had some surf (hurley?) hats for cheap.

sorry I'm late to the party, meant to reply earlier, I've had several bucket hats, the latest is the Xcel Essential Water hat, works well in summer (for sun) and winter (for sun & warmth). They float sorta, if you have time to grab it before the next wave. Usually they get washed off by the wave hitting the back of my head and flipping it off somehow, even with the chin strap. For larger surf I bought a HoStevie with the neck flap, and smaller profile, less sun protection in the temple/cheek area but less likely to wash off (so I thought), but it did on that last wed night surf and the strap ripped out of the liner. Gonna repair it but the Xcel hat is much better quality. The mode of failure on my old xcel was the small ball and spring thingy keeping the chin strap tight. So thats now the small wave day version and the new one I wear on bigger days. I really can't imagine surfing without one now, especially on those dp mornings with the sun blazing.

Since my scalp just fries with a full baseball cap like cover, I've found for me, a $19 amazon stretch band "Visor" works best. Y'just pull it down and hang it around your neck duck'n then, just squeeze the thing out after pulling it back up and off and slip it back on. Head stays airified cool, suns' outta d'eyes and, I'm ripp'n! Over 4' or know'n I'm be jamm'in fastfast along, just let'er rest on yur chest around your neck. YyeEw!
