Only tangentially related, and hopefully not a glance into anyone else's future:

I've lived with back pain for almost 3 decades now, but avoided surgical help.
I'm now 8 months post L5/S1 fusion, lots of PT, but still can't surf.
(well I'm about to try again today, but not with a lot of confidence).
