Everybody has seen all the computer graphic simulations on TV- but those were all hypothetical..

Today the first actual image of a black hole was released:

I've always thought that the mass at thecenter of a black hole was compressed down to an infinite smallness, or at least a tiny dot.

But I recently learned that's not the case at all- there's a big thing in there:

"The size of an event horizon depends on the black hole's mass. If Earth were compressed until it became a black hole, it would have a diameter of about 0.69 inches (17.4 millimeters), a little smaller than a dime; if the sun were converted to a black hole, it would be about 3.62 miles (5.84 kilometers) wide, about the size of a village or town. The supermassive black holes that the Event Horizon Telescope is observing are far larger; Sagittarius A*, at the center of the Milky Way, is about 4.3 million times the mass of our sun and has a diameter of about 7.9 million miles (12.7 million km), while M87 at the heart of the Virgo A galaxy is about 6 billion solar masses and 11 billion miles (17.7 billion km) wide."

Very ominous looking.

edit:
Katie Bouman reacted modestly to her sudden celebrity status this week, but the scientist whose graduate school work helped lead to the first image of a black hole Wednesday, is getting her due.

Bouman, who is an assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences at Cal Tech, created an algorithm during grad school at MIT that made the image possible.

Outstanding work Ms. Bouman...

Cool.

Yeah, they call it a singularity which makes me think of a single point (from my complex variables class), but by that they must mean nothing escapes. And/or space time has infinite distortion there.

So, could we get back Riddleme's connection to the Middle Earth just for a moment? At the end of Sauron's reign, when the ring is unforged, the earth just crumbles and all the bad guys sink. So, what is the density of evil? High I should think, like a black hole? Consider poor Smeagol falling into the lava at Mt. Doom. Molten basalt has a density of about 3, and even protohobbits would have a density around 1 like us. Yet Smeagol sinks!!! So, the density of bad guys must be pretty high. Like a black hole! Unfortunately, this new science may undermine somewhat the credibility of the duck/witch mass ratio test, throwing into question the wisdom of Authur, King of the Britons. Was that poor woman with the carrot nose a witch or not? I guess we'll never know. #scienceexonerateswitches?

Why can't we just send Enterprise to go scan it?
