Crap, a whole half of the 12 story building, 45 units, has crumbled to the ground! Just a pile of rubble. "40 to 50" units could add up to a lot of deaths.

There was another whole "half" of the building from the "break" out towards the beach.

We have to assume that the people who evacuated from the "other half" of the building will never be allowed back in and, as such, they have lost everything they own.

Kinda looked like the majority of the debris is underground.

Terrible... that video makes it look like one of those planned dynamite/demolition sequences, except that it's not

Ya, it was not an instance where parts of this-and-that fell, the whole fooking section just fell straight down!!!

A person very close to me operated "heavy equipment" to remove the debris to recover the bodies at the Harbor Cay Condo collapse in Cocoa Beach. As they told me ", , , , , , flat, really flat, , , , ,"

Imagine being in the section that stood for a few seconds. Simply terrifying.

I imagine all the old condos are getting looked at now. How comfortable would you be living in one of those old clunkers right now?

The thing that gets me about the news coverage is when they talk about this condo building "sinking" since "the 90's". Ya think? Please try to find me a building in that area that has not "sunk" any!!!!

"Buildings in nearby western Miami Beach, which was built on reclaimed wetlands, were moving at higher rates, "so we didn't think it was something unusual," he said.
While the sinking alone likely would not cause the tower's collapse, it could be a contributing factor because "if one part of the building moves with respect to the other, that could cause some tension and cracks," Wdowinski said."

This is a horrible, horrible event.
I pray that they find more survivors.

That condo is not far from the beach, and good chance the structural rebar, ties, and steel were badly corroded. I'm sure there were other contributing factors, but ocean salt air and uncoated steel is a bad combination.

How many condos around here have had to have their balconies rebuild because of corrosion? Yeah, a lot.

God bless them and I hope we learn something from this which helps us prevent it in other old condo buildings.

The way condo boards typically operate will come to light, blowing off required structural repairs for fru fru 'lipstick on the pig' projects.. The members ability to vote putting off required structural repairs is also going to be a think of the past.. Who will 'enforce' this and enact meaningful change? If the politiicians get greased and refuse to act (as expected), and cannot provide meaningful regulation, the actuaries at the insurance companies will do their jobs for them... Also their ability to choose 'yes sir' engineers to tell them it's OK to leave 'as is'. I have seen many buildings where they have caulking severe cracks in columns/beam frames and slabs & paint over - obviously looking to sell & run.. From what I've seen with balcony corrosion repair jobs, lots/most board members are looking to put lipstick on the pig, sell their units, and run with the profits.. They treat their fidicuary responsibility like a joke.. That will also be coming to a grinding halt.. Hate to say it but I see a fire sale on condos, especially beachside - and a price hike in single family beachside homes.. I have not seen many pools next to the main building structural frames here in Brevard, but that 'concept' is one that the insurance companies will bring to a grinding halt. - just like diving boards in pools..

I imagine a 10 million dollar "special assessment" is the kind of thing a lot of condo association members might vote against.

Sees a bit similar to what is happening to infrastructure generally in the USA. Wrong forum maybe for that discussion.

The swimming pool "thing" in Surfside is that it seems that it was over the "below ground" parking??

On good, solid, ground the cracking concrete and rusty rebar might not be such a big deal BUT, when the building is on top of typical Florida "sand", with its normal settling and shifting, , , , , , Watch Out!!!

The phone call the lady made to her husband saying the pool disappeared then her line going dead, was horrifying. I read all of the original engineering companies are long gone and the Principals that signed off on the specs are dead.
Terrible all around.

I guess it's a good time to be in the engineering/inspection business. I bet the phones are ringing off the hook.
