Hey, I have an AntiGravity battery in one of my cars! (it is a LiFePo4 lightweight batt)

But seriously, That is cool, in an engineering rag i had read about some different ways to do civil energy storage without the need for water and dams. It is an interesting field and an important one with the rivers like the Colorado flowing less.

Interesting tradeoff there, on the net loss of electricity (operating at less than 100% efficiency) vs the ability to store energy for later. Conceptually, that's what EVs do at idle (traffic lights & stop signs) if they're recharging batteries instead of shutting off completely.

There could be similar concepts exploited at unique points on planet Earth (and others that rotate), like the geographic North and South Poles, where the torque from a slightly off-center point tied to a vertical shaft right at the pole could be integrated to lift blocks, or along the equator, where the centrifugal force could be used.

Similarly, at the magnetic North and South Poles, where magnetic fields are most dense (steepest gradients), you might be able to take advantage of iron moving continuously through that field.

Back to the pumped hydroelectric storage, I wonder if you could take advantage of something like that on a smaller scale at places like the locks at Port Canaveral, or where you have rapidly moving water during tidal changes at Sebastian Inlet.

What we really need though, is to be able to store all the waves that go unridden at night, especially at places like Jaws and Mavericks, and re-distribute those to less privileged beaches like ours, during daytime hours. That's be great.

Very cool. I have always wondered why those places with huge tide ranges don't take advantage of that.

Bamboo - you got an EV or did you change out a lead acid for lithium? Was thinking of swapping the AGM 12v in Mrs. Tom's hybrid to lithium...

Oh, and another mechanical electrical storage scheme is pumping air into played out gas wells or similar, then using that pressure to spin turbines when needed. All these, water, air, gravity, have some mechanical loss associated but compared to fossil, they're pretty clean.

Tom - I replaced a Pb battery that weighted 44 pounds with the LiFePo4 that weighs 11 pounds. It is in street car I drag race for fun so it was for the weight savings. So far have been happy with the battery and would buy it again. It holds charge really well and spins a big v8 better than the Pb battery. A little pricey initially...about 3x the cost of a Pb, but it is suppose to last 10 years or so, which is about 3x longer than the Pb batt so it evens out if you keep it that long. AntiGravity has decent sales on their batteries on the major holidays.

Ah. Didn't realize AntiGravity was a brand name. Longer is good, the AGM in the hybrid lasts about 2 years according to the guys at the shop. It get worked hard. Looks like some cyber Monday hohoho! Thanks.

Important Christmas Mrs. Question for Everyone: Would yours appreciated an $800 battery that weighs less, lasts longer and is way cooler than the one she's got? Or .... Right. If I get this for her present I'm screwed. Maybe it'll be for me!

LOL!
Yeah, nope...don't do it. That would be like getting her an iron for Christmas.

The lightweight LiFePo4 batteries from companies like AntiGravity and Arc-Angel are good for cars that benefit from the weight savings (racing, or sports cars and motorcycles) or charging characteristics (i.e. no gasses). Some are coming OEM with them now.

My wife could care less what her car battery weighs as long as the electrons are flowing.
