"When DART hit Dimorphos, it was guaranteed to change the asteroid's course because of the fundamental physical laws of conservation of energy and momentum. If its orbit around Didymos does not change at all after the impact, then Newton's laws of motion will have been disproved.

DART will not disprove Newton.

If Dimorphos is solid, and DART carves only a small crater, then the change will follow the basics of a Physics 101 problem - two objects colliding and sticking together. Because DART is moving in the direction opposite to Dimorphos, it will sap some of the asteroid's angular momentum, causing it to move closer to Didymos and speed up.

But if Dimorphos is more like a pile of rubble held together by gravity, then the impact will create a deep crater and send a shower of debris flying into space. That cascade of rock will be like the thrust of a rocket engine pushing against the asteroid. In that case, the orbit of Dimorphos (whose name is Greek for "having two forms") will descend even closer to Didymos (that name is Greek for "twin").


"The LICIACube will capture images of DART's demise as well as the resulting crater. But because it is so small - its antenna is small, too - it will only be able to send data slowly via a weak radio signal to the radio dishes of NASA's Deep Space Network. It will probably be a day or two before the first of the LICIACube's images are available."


The key measurement will be the change in the time it takes Dimorphos to complete an orbit around Didymos. The head-on crash of DART will sap some of Dimorphos's angular momentum, causing it to fall a bit closer to Didymos. That is predicted to speed up Dimorphos and shorten its orbital period, currently 11 hours, 55 minutes, by about 1 percent.

"We will notice that the binary asteroid system is running fast," Dr. Statler said.

That measurement, by radar and by the periodic dimming as Dimorphos passes in front of or behind Didymos, will take some time.

"I would be surprised if we had a firm measurement of the period change in less than a few days," Dr. Statler said. "And I would be really surprised if it took more than three weeks."

So we know it changed the orbit, and we have the cubesat footage Very cool!

Prior to DART's impact, it took Dimorphos 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit its larger parent asteroid, Didymos.

Since DART's intentional collision with Dimorphos on Sept. 26, astronomers have been using telescopes on Earth to measure how much that time has changed.

Now, the investigation team has confirmed the spacecraft's impact altered Dimorphos' orbit around Didymos by 32 minutes, shortening the 11 hour and 55-minute orbit to 11 hours and 23 minutes.

This measurement has a margin of uncertainty of approximately plus or minus 2 minutes.

The "ejecta" photos almost seem to show electric discharges? around them.
