A fairly recent map of tornado tracks in Kentucky (no doubt from a college biology professor and flight instructor who posts enthusiastically at Facebook) suggests that the long term probability of getting hit by severe winds is fairly high. So although the state has lots of forests, if you think in terms of the lifetime of a tree, it's chances of dying in a tornado might be fairly high.

A year after Andrew, the Miami Herald published a full-page map of wind intensity inferred from damage. In a familiar pattern, there were patches of super-intense winds. Homestead Air Force Base was hit by two separate ones. Damage like a really bad tornado. Since then, I've been suspicious of anyone who claims to be building anything that's sure to survive a strong cat-4 or 5.
