Insightful...I kind of lose some respect for him with this interview, but I do respect his guitar playing. Really interesting if you are a Pink Floyd fan, from Syd Barrett to the present. He is super honest on how he felt at the time about the music.

What respect did you lose for Gilmore?

I enjoyed both but Waters is a more interesting fellow to listen to in an interview for sure. He has a good memory!

Syd Barret, what a sad story.

It was funny when the interviewer mixed up what songs were on what albums in his questions.

I kinda forget now, but maybe that he didn't like the psychedelic side of pink floyd and wanted to be more blues-rock. And, that he just doesn't seem like an outgoing person. Maybe the interviewer caught him on a bad day. I did use to listen to his solo albums, maybe I'll go back and revisit them. I've stayed with Roger Waters solos albums though. I like them. Politics aside I just like his Rock attitude. He was a founding member of Pink Floyd and Gilmour came on afterwards. But, of course their biggest success was with Gilmour. Wish they would get back together and bury the hatchet, whatever that is. Time is a ticking.

However, i'm glad I get to see Roger Waters in August. Last tour he said probably was going to be his last. Gawd knows he doesn't need the money. Reportedly Waters is one of the richest musicians.

Gilmour is an introvert. He's said as much in a couple other interview.

I dunno he seems like a decent bloke. Great guitar player and vocalist for me.

The thing that stays with me about all this is that they never just dismissed Syd even though he developed mental health issues. They kept on acknowledging him and talking about him.

It's funny how they all say they just one day they were going around picking up all the band members and decided one day not to pick Syd up!

I think Syd Barrett was a pretty special musician. Mostly a gifted song writer (I liked Waters characterization that his songs were visual or painterly), experimental guitar player and vocalist. The transition was obviously hard for Gilmore who came in as a blues/rock guitar player trying to figure out Barrett's style and songs- not easy. I still find it hard to believe that only Barrett was using acid based on their music. It's amazing they were able to mesh their later music with the psychedelic experience without it. Compare it to other "psychedelic bands" like the Doors or Jefferson Airplane where all or at least most of the members used acid all the time during that period- and their music shows it! Yet PF apparently got that same groove without Waters, Mason using drugs and only moderate pot smoking by Gilmore and Wright. Nah!

Think about the rock music of the decades and what drugs they were using.

50s Alcohol and Cigarettes. ---> Be-pop, sock-hops, crooners, rockabilly
60s Amphetamines, LSD, Pot, mushrooms ---> psychedelic, folk, experimental pop.
70s Pot, alchohol, cocaine, Qualudes, ---> Classic rock, corporate rock, heavy metal, Disco, Punk
80s Pot, cocaine, alcohol, ---> New Wave, Hair Metal, Punk, Rap
90s Heroin, pot, alcohol ---> grunge, rave, industrial, death metal, Rap-metal

Just generically speaking and probably could refine that above somewhat. Who knows how long heroin has been around. I read that the early jazz artist pre ww2 were all hooked on it.

In the Roger Waters interview I think he said that Syd Barrett was already a space cadet pre LSD, so taking the LSD probably wacked him out even more.

That is an interesting correlation between the type of drugs and type of rock. Don't forget Ecstasy which probably influenced the prevalence of dance/mosh beat music in the 80s.
