I was a fan. I think the stone roses were more influential but that's just me.

Bwahaha fanboy author. Were they part of the genre/movement in the late 80s? Sure. I liked em too. But "laid the foundation"? Gimme a break.

Alt-Rock foundations were laid way before LnR. WPRK (Rollins) was playing the best music in the 80s. Stuff that really influenced what we know as the Alt-Rock of the 90s.

IMO Alt-Rock had much earlier influences going back to the mid 60's. Syd Barret and Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one example. The Velvet Underground & Nico is another. Granted, Alt-Rock didn't go mainstream until much later but the first stones of the foundation were laid in the psychedelic 60s.

Agreed, even the Psychedelic Furs were prior and more influential.

I saw the Love & Rockets back in their heyday at some theater in Orlando. They were good live. But, they were really obscure.

Absolutely right. Was just speaking from perspective of my first exposure to "pre" alt-rock genres beginning during the late 70s early 80s.

I suppose we'd be remiss not including Bowie and early glam bands from late 60s early 70s.
