http://www.npr.org/2022/07/29/...ow-when-to-embrace-it
>> "Part of this book started with this love that I have of sad music," says Cain. She asked herself: why we don't feel worse when we listen to sad music? Instead, we often feel uplifted and connected to the artist and other listeners who are also trying to tap into the emotions of the songs.

In a conversation with Life Kit, Cain argues that those of us who love sad music have what she calls the "bittersweet condition." It's a state she describes as the recognition of life's impermanence, a kind of acknowledgement that everyone and everything we hold dear will not be here forever. And with that melancholic recognition comes greater, not less, contentment, says Cain. So, embracing your melancholy could make you happier in the long run.<<

I used to have a text list of the saddest songs with a friend and we would laugh that somehow sadness jump started the creativity. And those songs, though sad, didn't make me sad or depressed. Some of them are anchored forever to the time I heard them and played them so often I thought they became mine. My mind seems to use songs as landmarks in my life and it seems that their sadness, or melancholy was far more interesting than the happy songs. I always intuited this and knew it without thinking but this article really drew it out well.

Good post, thanks.

Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system.

In biology, such behavior of cells is called "cancer".

I have a Patsy Cline station on Pandora for this very reason.

This came up the other day.

There's a Rush lyric from the song "Losing It" that sometimes crushes my soul:

Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we'd like to be

Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you, the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee

That's pretty amazing.

Here's one to guess:
A sense of duty was my one intention
And an ugly beauty was my own invention.
Pride, proud refusal
I refuse to meet your approval

Jackson Browne. There's a spoken bit on Solo Acoustic (1?) where he says something to the effect that "my cheerful stuff, well, there's really not that much of it".

Perhaps not so much a "sad" song but I love these lyrics taken from Tanglewood Tree

"I'm bankin' on the fables of the far, far better things we do"

"Who nurtures the faith of a child, when nothing remains to cover her eyes?"

"My body has a number and my face has a name"

Hejira - Joni Mitchell

...There's comfort in melancholy. When there's no need to explain. It's just as natural as the weather. In this moody sky today....

My favorite is a Devo Lyric.
Something 'bout the way you taste, makes me want to clear my throat.

There's a madness to your movement
That really gets my goat.

From old faith no more:
Tried so hard to control my behavior
I tried so hard, so hard to believe you
But now I live only to deceive you

So hug me and kiss me
Then wipe my butt and piss me
I hope you never leave
'Cause who would hear me scream

Keith Whitley died from alcohol at age 34- said when he heard this song by sonny curtis(Im no stranger to the rain) it felt like a biography-

When I get that foggy feeling
The one I'm feeling now
If I don't keep my head up, I may drown
But it's hard to keep believing
I'll even come out even
While the rain beats a hole in the ground
And tonight, it's really coming down
I'm no stranger to the rain

Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.
And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

Damn panda. That' put a lump in my throat. Well done 3rd.

From the Smiths "and when I'm lying in my bed.
I think about life and I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me"

From soul asylum:
I fell in love with a hooker
She laughed in my face
So seriously I took her
I was a disgrace

I was out of line
I was out of place
Out of time to save face
See the open mouth of my suitcase
Saying "Leave this place...
Leave without a trace...
Leave without a trace...

And Soul asylum again with We 3:
I've known you forever, you two just met
So easily amused; how fast we forget
In my jealously, my self-righteous greed
She's a bit like a book I'm too far sighted to read
And I wish you the best, I sometimes feel the need
To say remember me?....
