Gender is a human construct. Application of a binary classification to something that is infinitely variable is pretty unsophisticated; I'd say in 2019 we're ready to move beyond classical simplistic conceptions like binary gender.
Understanding on the subject has evolved. People who are scared of a changing world rebel against it, as they always have done. Science moves forward, and ignorance is forgotten.

This stuff makes my head hurt. I don't understand what the goal is. Gender is an integral part of quite a few of the most prevalent languages on earth. Is it now considered insensitive to speak Spanish? The vast majority of people aren't going along with what you are proposing because it creates more problems than it solves and for what?

Is it that hard to imagine what it might be like to have been born a hermaphrodite, with atypical genitalia, or with male parts and dominant female hormones? The occurrence of sexual "abnormalities" is a lot more normal than you think.

I think it's best to uncouple "gender" from biological sex traits. Maybe that's what's tripping people up.

Because I see that the majority of us ALLREADY ARE handling our growing understanding of the vast beautiful range of human sexuality just fine, we just roll with it, let people be who thev are. Sure the millennial searching for pronouns is kind of confusing and hard to keep up with as it's evolving. So don't worry about it . Nobody is going to get violent if you use the wrong pronoun. I still have a hard time using the singular "them" also, it doesn't flow. But I ain't worried so much about getting it wrong either. I'd rather not offend, I'd rather use the names people want me to, so I listen, learn what words they want me to use to define them, and least try.

Yea, those languages that have so entrenched binary gender into everything are going to need to grow up a lot. Spanish is especially bad with the all nouns gendered silliness, but even spanish does have room for ambiguity. But the sexism in the language both reflects and drives sexist behavior.

Some of you can't seem to handle it very well at all. A shame, because seeing anything as pure black or pure white is almost certainly seeing it incorrectly, missing nuance.

But I do agree with the head hurting bit. It's all changing fast, people are looking for the words to describe who they are. I don't blame anybody for having trouble understanding it, especially us old people.

But here is the key. You don't need to. You don't need to understand the nuances of every point on the sexual identity spectrum. your don't need to know all of the pronouns.

Just recognize that the wide range exists and let them be, let them pee. Safely.
Just work on understanding your own sex, and the quirks of the ones you love.

Cheater, if you have to see everyone as binary then you are certainly free to do so.
Ask everyone to show you even. Place them in one box or the other. Nobody cares what goes on in your head, where you draw the line. You can even keep it to yourself.

I'm probably going to use the wrong pronoun and I honestly do not care. I don't have time for this shit and I'm not making time for it. It has nothing to do with intentionally hurting anyone's feelings. It has more to do with changing something as significant as how we address people so we can accommodate 0.6% of our population. If a majority muslim country has 0.6% Christians, would you think it was normal that the Christians start demanding the muslim country to make major changes to the way they speak in order to accommodate them?

It isn't just Spanish. Plenty of languages rely heavily on masculine and feminine nouns and adjectives. The left wants to change all of them? That's what is important right now?

Depends on how you define being a "dick". If I am part of a group that makes up 0.6% of a population and I start demanding major changes in how the majority speaks to accommodate me, then that probably makes me the dick. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who struggle determining right and left but we aren't going to do away with that concept.

How did people go from advocating for trans tolerance to a trans-person shouting a business owner down as a bigot because he walked in for a Brazilian wax and the business owner refused to wax his balls, in less than five years or so?

Is it a "major change" to honor someone's pronoun preference? I agree it can be hard to remember, but at least trying helps people who are already pretty ostracized feel a bit more validated. I don't feel that's a major effort on my part.

Don't get distracted by the extreme stories that are sought out and amplified in conservative media. Their job is to manufacture outrage and fear because it sells.

I'm wondering how much the trans community even cares about this. This sounds like it could be another cause that liberals are taking up to make themselves feel warm and fuzzy. Comedians say they can look into a crowd and point out who is going to get the most offended by edgy jokes before they even tell them. Lily white guys and gals are more worked up over race than the vast majority of the minorities. Why? Makes them feel good about themselves. At its core, there is way more selfishness and narcissistic behavior involved in this thinking than what is on the surface. Some people are looking for any reason to make themselves look like a hero. You can't have heroes without villains, so that requires demonizing others. Sometimes it is warranted but more and more it isn't justified. The level of smugness in this country is reaching critical mass.

Everyone is annoyed by over sensitive and intolerant people. It's the same thing with the "holier than thou" religious people who dress up and want to be seen in the front pew on Sunday, then go around shitting on people the rest of the week. They clutch pearls over tattoos or piercings, hate on gays, "liberals", foreigners, you name it. There's no one more "smug" than a TV preacher. Talk about demonizing people to look like a hero.

I'm so bad at remembering pronouns that I'm trying to get used to calling everyone "they/them". I don't know if some of these kids are sincerely transgender or if it's an identity thing that makes them feel part of a group, but kids these days have enough to worry about without people like me hassling them about it.
