It starts with Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons" and builds from there. You learn a lot about what makes people tick and what collective behaviors and motivations can lead to better or worse collective outcomes. The biggie is that "rational self interest" that maximizes the utility of short term economic decisions tends to drive the bus. It is why capitalism is the most productive and most efficient economic system. But it is also an Achilles heal of sorts when collective fuckups and lizard brain decision making cause market failures. Academics and Democrats make the fatal error of trying to appeal to logic and "good nature" to get people to make better decisions when collective action is needed to elevate average outcomes. The oligarchs have learned that you can really drive people by pushing the lizard brain buttons.

I used to think this too. But it's only true on the small scale. The moment capitalists can afford to purchase the systems of authority it goes out the window. "Efficient" is not empty housing units while people are evicted, food thrown away when kids are hungry, or billions given to corporations as "covid relief" while small business fails.

In fact, you're not talking about capitalism at all, you're talking about free markets. And the first thing they teach in capitalism (bidness) school is how to defeat free markets and create monopoly.
