N95 respirators are some of the most effective masks and they don't protect anyone but the person wearing them. They have a valve in them specifically for expelling dirty air.

If wearing a mask makes you feel better than by all means DO IT. The studies I have ready don't support that cotton fabric is doing any good for you or those around you.

News reports and health organizations are all basically telling people it can't hurt to wear a mask but most of the studies show that they don't do any good.

It's not just about covering coughs, moron.

You can, but do you? Always and every time? A lot of people don't. Mask is same concept as covering the cough except it is there no matter whether you are coughing or talking loudly or talking in all caps or breathing hard from the exertion of walking from the parking lot to the Publix. If people effectively covered their coughs on average then flu and colds wouldn't spread so quickly when they come around.
