Yes, he socialized the country and was able to raise much of the population out of poverty. His governance was successful and the people were accepting of his socialist ideology. He was well liked and re-elected. What he and the nation failed to realize is, a nationalized economy will eventually always bleed out. In their case it started with a lack of reinvestment in economic and industrial infrastructure, especially petroleum production which the government controlled economy was highly dependent on. As such Venezuela became almost totally dependent on foreign imports for their quality of life. When world oil prices dropped, the bottom fell out of their economy because they couldn't compete globally anymore. Oil revenues went to zero and the quality of life dropped dramatically as inflation sky rocketed. This is when tyrannical rule set in with Maduro, who was appointed rather than elected, and accept for his wealthy elitist supporters life became a living hell and a full time struggle for survival. 90% on the nation now lives well below poverty. Their economy will take decades is recover even if the economy is again privatized. China can't even bail that nation out and has all but given up trying. The richest nation in Latin America was brought down in just over a decade in another failed socialist experiment. The similarities of US Democratic Party platform of today, and Venezuela of the late 20th Century are simply too great to ignore. Those that can't learn from history are destined to repeat it. We should be smarter than that.

Socialism. That's what's relevant today to you?

Kleptocratic plutocracies are shitty unstable places. Most of us non-QOP folks do not want a nationalized economy. We also do not want to live in a modern version of Feudal Europe.

Well if zoos is done telling scary stories to the kids, you can consider the truth: http://psmag.com/ideas/corrupt...rought-down-venezuela

Socialism is just public ownership of the "means of production", which might be anything that the people need and don't trust in the hands of capitalists.

In fact, many socialist enterprises thrive right here in the good old US of A, such as the Bank of North Dakota (http://bnd.nd.gov/history-of-bnd/)

Or the your public library. Or Medicare. Or Social Security. Democratic Socialism is only as good as democracy itself, and as we all know in 2020, that's pretty shaky sometimes.

Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system.

In biology, such behavior of cells is called "cancer".

My daughter was offered a teaching job there when he was ruling. It was a great deal. Luckily her personal problems delayed her accepting the job and before she got it corrected, he died. The country turned into a schitthole like us. Keeping the oil money was their only concern. They turned into us.
