In 2016, The Atlantic wrote about this trend.

>>Donald Trump's candidacy offers a compelling case study. The conservatives who support Trump - perhaps half of all Republicans or more - say they like that he "speaks his mind" even if his views are "politically incorrect." In other words, Trump makes no effort to be inclusive or tolerate those with whom he disagrees. For his supporters, policies of mass deportation and discrimination are acceptable because they push back against the new moral code.

Staring at Trump's carefully coifed hairdo across the fence are liberals and younger, more moderate conservatives. Having come of age during the shift from moral relativism, they place a higher value on tolerating others' opinions and avoiding discrimination. Because they are offended by Trump's violation of social virtue, this group can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and on meme-laden Instagram shaming Trump and all who support him.

Now in 2020, the GOP has engaged in what they euphemistically call power politics or the more accurate moral relativism. By definition: " Moral relativism is the view that moral judgments are true or false only relative to some particular standpoint (for instance, that of a culture or a historical period) and that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others. It has often been associated with other claims about morality: notably, the thesis that different cultures often exhibit radically different moral values; the denial that there are universal moral values shared by every human society; and the insistence that we should refrain from passing moral judgments on beliefs and practices characteristic of cultures other than our own.

The Pre-trump conservatives claimed ownership of a real morality, of knowing right and wrong and applying it to all equally. They exalted themselves and their faiths, they identified and condemned others, they kept score and the punished violators. Those days are gone and even the pretense of moral authority has been abandoned.

Donald trump is the equivalent of the bad crowd they have been hanging out with excuse. They have been hanging out with Trump and now they aren't talking or acting like the people we knew. I am not suggesting that they had some monopoly on morality or that they were better than liberals, I am pointing out the devolution of their stated goals from their history to their current actions.

They established a precedent with Merrick Garland that the voters should elect the next SCOTUS with their vote for president. They are now in the exact same position and their position about it has changed along with their justification. They are now proving that it's not what they said then, they have always been consistent and are clear to avoid any mention of right or wrong. It's now based upon a justification that the Democrats would do it if they had the power to.

This also true with big money donors. They shamed democrats for taking Harvey Weinsteins pac money, but when a casino owner rapist is now Giving them millions, they have no mora issue with that.>> Wynn has denied all allegations of sexual misconduct, calling them "preposterous." He characterized the rape allegation as "extortion." He has not faced criminal charges. Still, he stepped down as CEO of his company. The head of the Republican Party, Ronna McDaniel, said she "removed" Wynn from his role as finance chair of the Republican National Committee. Some Republicans, including Ohio Senator Rob Portman and then-House Speaker Paul Ryan, donated contributions they'd received from Wynn to charity."<<

The times have changed. There are so many more examples. But the trend is clear.

Once it's been boiled down and all the bullshit has been cooked away, a pile of not very good people are sitting at the bottom of the pot. The renderings are hypocrites, liars, opportunists, racists and assholes who ejaculate morals from the roof tops, but have no real use for them in real life.

It will be annoying to watch them play victim after the Democrats use their example to exact political revenge.
