There is brilliant analysis of Jesus vs the Church by Doestoyevsky in the Brothers Karamazov. He puts a reincarnated Jesus in Spain during the inquisition. There's Jesus in jail and in chains when he is visited by the Grand Inquisitor. Jesus is a problem for him. The church and the grand inquisitor have grown so powerful in Jesus' name that the only threat to that power is Jesus. I won't spoil the story but needless to say Doestoyesky saw this back then and we are still looking at the same thing.
