I'm not sure what the answer is but we haven't seen a combat death of any of our troops since February of 2020, so I'm not sure we could say we were still at war over there.

I feel bad for all the people who will be punished for cooperating with us, the women who will be punished for having the audacity to go to school, and stuff like that. A lot of those people make under $1000 a year, so life sucked pretty bad for them before this happened.

We went in without a clear objective or an exit strategy. This day was always looming large on the horizon and we knew it so we extended our stay to postpone thinking that maybe the passage of time would justify our nation building field trip. Trump left Biden holding the bag but it was always going to be a miserable disaster as soon as the taliban filled the void of our absence. We couldn't make them the first American state in the Middle East. We couldn't train their army when all of the soldier age men who wanted to fight already were fighting against the US and we couldn't wait them out. It's now up to Afghanistan to purge itself of hypocritical zealots who would rather kill a girl than see her educated. It's up them to start their own insurrection against the taliban. We couldn't even leave them the guns to fight because they just gave them to the invading taliban. They may no deserve or need this but twenty years is long enough for us to know we can't do anything more than own the day and hope the night never comes.
