But yes, we do contribute to climate and environmental change but, , , , , even if we were not here, the climate would still get warm and then cold, rinse, repeat, , , , ,

Well that's exactly what it did before there were humans. So, I'd have to say that is correct. So the question is, do these other forces that have warmed and cooled the planet multiple times overwhelm any contribution that we make. Don't think that has been determined.

But, then again, the Sun will very soon have a routine Nova and, , , , , that's it folks ! We can only pray that we have cleaned the Earth up, , , , , , , before its surface gets instantly converted to atom ash.

You guys are right- all those cars, trucks planes and machinery aren't emitting anything. You should prove it to us by sitting in your closed garage while your car runs for an hour ![]() ------------------------- ![]() |

Yes it has. Understanding the differences in the relative time scales involved is key. "they" are not These folks. Like real fish said, where does it all go? Billions of people emitting tons of gasses in a closed system. From inside out anyway.
Does all this crap do nothing? ------------------------- I was right. |

Ya, the time scale thingy is two-edged, , , , ,
On the bigger edge is the fact that we think we know enough to think we know enough about Long Term climate changes. But, lots of "on the street" folks like us don't know much about it at all and otherwise don't pick up on all of the little dramas and such. Back in the last century we were taught about geographic changes in terms of strict Gradualism; "hundreds of thousands of years" and "millions of years", and such. Our 20th century education "stunts" our ability to grasp many recent findings, even if we become aware of them at all! The Greenland ice cores are a big example. A lot of the cores had been drawn some years ago but, the in-depth analysis and data collection is pretty recent. Some years ago I read a science oriented article that talked about the cores showing that there had been "dramatic" climate changes in as little as 50-70 years. But now, with all the refinements in measuring capabilities and such they know that the time frames are much, much, shorter than previously estimated. One temperature increase during The Younger Dryas period was as much as 18 F, in as little as 5 years!! Back in 1990 your response would have been: "You've got to be joking, that can't be, it's impossible, , ,". But now it's: "What The F!!". And on, , , , , , , Humanity is the other edge. We are being challenged by a lot that we do not yet fully understand. We've got a pretty good grip on lots of it but, we have a big problem dealing with our "desires" versus reality. It's hard for us to accept/adapt the current climate changes, regardless of what the current-versus-historical might show us. The time frame of our human wants/needs/hopes/musts/can't and such is much too short to deal with much, if any, climate and/or geologic changes. The increase in the current rate of temperature increase is certainly of concern but, we must accept that in "geologic time frames" the Earth's temperature has increased every day since the end of the last Ice Age and, at that, we should expect it to continue to rise. For sure, we need to do what we can do to decrease the rate of increase but, at the same time and perhaps more importantly, we need to plan for how we as a civilization need to deal with continually rising temperatures and seas. ------------------------- Dora Hates You |
