Its getting late in the season for tarpon on the SW Florida coast, but I have not gotten one for 2 years.

Picked up 2 grandkids at odark thirty . Out of Bokellia, headed straight to Captiva pass. Flat calm water lots of clouds.

So some are rolling. A few other boats out. Decided to go with the Hogy lures. No action. Saw a large pod of greenies. Sabikied up a dozen. Started drifting on the incoming tide.

Grandkid gets a hit.40# test with 80# leader. Runs off around 50 yards of line...hook comes off. Im not too stoked. We dont get another chance. Oh well head in to stilt houses and let the gkids limit out on trout with paddle tails and top waters .

Tarpon are a pain in the ass. They will smash and steal your $15 top water lure and then refuse a free lined live bait on light leader, or they will go ballistic on little shrimp or glass minnows and steadfastly refuse any and everything you throw at them.

And what's with the one lure one hit deal? I used to fish for them in the canals and once one hit a lure that was it for that lure and I'd have to switch to something else.

We ended up catching mangrove snapper today. Good size too. Went back to the dock and fileted them and watch a 100lb tarpon eating the carcasses of the snapper. Damn fish.
