Went on 4/23/2025

Picked up grandson Owen. Met Capt Bob at Bairs Cove odark thirty. Bob had his bubbly live wells filled with 3-inch croakers. He caught them in traps. Just out into the Lagoon, left turn to the north. It is an incredible pristine day. There are very few other boats out. (maybe 2)
Not far to the north Bob takes a slight turn to the east. We are in a large grass flat, maybe 2" of water. There is mut bait activity. We bait up the croakers and toss out. I get hit as soon as mine hits the water, as does Owen. 2 legal on ice. Bait up and toss out again. @ more slot. We put one more on ice. We decide to wait on the big one. It's about 7:15 and we basically have limit. We stay at this spot just catching one after the other. Bob joins in. There are a few sail cats in the mix. I get a really nice strike. I am using one of my rods. It's an 8' Terramar with Stradic 5000 reel. 40# braid with 40# floro carbon leader. It's a little much for what we are doing. However, this one is 23", perfect. Limit trout. I switch to a GLoomis greenwater with a stadic 2500 reel. 10# power pro with a 20# leader. You can really feel the bait and fish with this set up. We estimated that we caught and released over 50 trout in 5 hours. We moved around just a little north and south of our original position. Back home. I clean the trout. Beautiful translucent fillets. I invite the fam over. Light egg waste and Zaratrains fish coat. Into the oil. Fresh cut french fries, hush puppies, fresh made cole slaw.
This is what I like!

Picked up Ray and headed to Bair's Cove (Haulover) to meet Capt. Bob at O dark thirty.
Out into the beautiful pristine Mosquito Lagoon. On a full moon cycle. Had some substantial rain earlier, in the week. We knew these conditions are not the best.

Just off the ramp we drop some of the palm sized croakers into the cut. Bam, Ray's drag is screaming. I immediately surmise that this is a bull shark. Good run and then a clean cut off. Sharp teeth for sure. Not exactly what we are looking for. At the same time, I am on a substantial sail cat. (For some reason I really don't like these slimy critters.)

We head out into the Lagoon. Absolutely gorgeous day. No other boats out. We went to the same grass flat that we had went 2 weeks earlier, where we had trout, trout, trout.

Now we get Red, cat, trout, cat, cat, trout. So overall we get not quite 20 trout. At least 20 cats. We head down to whale's tail. Because of the rain, there is what I call "shit weed" in the water. Get a few trout, another red and cats. I hook another line screamer in 2 feet of water. I'm running lots of line off, but I can see it: Bull shark for sure. I encourage Bob to fire up the motor to give chase. I know I cannot turn this thing. After 5 minutes the line is cut. I have plenty of fish in the freezer. We did all release on this trip.

Not our best trip. However, I love being out on that water!
