I've had a few runs periodically over the years which I've attributed to my cultivation of earth worms. While they've aggravated me, they never stressed me. Aeration, I figured, if nothing else. My neighbor and I across the street seem to share them; when they were in my yard, they had none and vice versa. I figure they'd deplete my population of worms and grubs, cross the street and then return when they've depleted theirs. This year, though, I have far, far, far more runs than normal. Almost my entire backyard is a big sponge. I sink 2 inches wherever I step and there are 10 or so entry/exit holes regularly (whereas I used to only have one or two). Now, they've moved to the front. I asked my neighbors if they had any (figuring they didn't, that it was my turn), but they described the same infestation that I have. Furthermore, they are walkers and they are seeing them in everybody else's yards too. I've never had any success in controlling them, so gave up years ago. Nothing ever worked. I've tried lethal spike traps, baits, and Juicy Fruit gum. I've had cats and a rat terrier and they were useless, too. I don't have a solution and I figure nobody else does either, so just count this as a rant.

Moles have been on the wane in my yard. The front yard was long full of little mounds and, if I dug, it was like a Swiss cheese.

My yard is mole heaven.
My cat and Jack Russell use to hunt them. But no more. They don't bother me. Just gotta not twist an ankle in Certain sections of the yard. Strange creatures. |
