Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Melbourne FL 217 PM EDT Sat May 2 2020 ...April 2020 was Warmer Than Normal with Near to Above Normal Rainfall Across East Central Florida... After an extremely dry March, a more active weather pattern developed across Florida into April. Several fronts moved through the area, with multiple rounds of showers and strong storms crossing east central Florida, especially during the second half of the month. This increase in rainfall produced near to above normal precipitation for April, helping ease drought conditions in place. Any cold fronts that crossed the state, however, were weak, with above normal temperatures continuing to dominate across the region. Average temperatures for the month ranked within the top ten warmest for April at most locations, with numerous high and warm minimum temperature records set or tied through the month. ...Temperatures... A frontal passage at the start of April led to a brief drop in temperatures through the 3rd, with the coolest lows for the month, in the upper 40s to mid 50s, occurring during this period. Additional cold fronts crossed the area through the month, but any reprieve from the prevailing warmer than normal temperatures was limited. The ongoing trend this year of abundant warm temperature records (both record highs and warm lows) being set or tied across the region continued into April (see list below). In fact, on the 13th, the hottest day of the month, temperatures soared into the mid to upper 90s that afternoon. This not only obliterated the records for the day at all primary climate sites, but also set new record highs for the month at Sanford and Vero Beach, where the max temperatures reached 97 degrees at both sites. Well above normal overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s also set monthly records during the 12th and 13th at Leesburg, Orlando, Vero Beach and Fort Pierce. Monthly average temperatures were around 3 to 4 degrees above normal, with all primary climate sites, except Daytona Beach, within their respective top ten warmest April rankings on record. This well above normal warmth that has persisted since January actually ranks as the warmest start to a year on record for much of the area, including at Daytona Beach, Leesburg, Sanford, Orlando and Vero Beach! A few fronts produced some showers and isolated storms across the area into early April, but for the most part drier than normal conditions prevailed during the first half of the month. This combined with the extreme lack of rainfall in March, led to moderate to severe drought conditions developing across east central Florida. However, from mid-month onward, several bands of showers and strong to at times severe thunderstorms crossed the area ahead of approaching cold fronts. The most notable of these storm systems moved through the region on the 20th, with straight line wind damage occurring in DeLand and around Palm City and Stuart, as well as an EF-0 tornado, with estimated winds of 60-65 mph, forming in the Lake Jesup area, south of Sanford. Rainfall totals for the month ranged from around 2 to 4 inches for much of the area, with higher amounts up to 5 to 9 inches occurring across portions of Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Martin counties. For Stuart, which had 8.70 inches of rainfall, it was the 2nd wettest April on record. Elsewhere across the region, this near to above normal rainfall didn`t rank within the top ten wettest for the month, but was sufficient to help improve drought conditions into the end of April.
