I wish this was a story of well wishing and long term friendships instead of what it has turned out to be.

Kelly's career has been amazing to watch and, like any sport we watch, it's always sad to see the critics ruling and judging them. Questioning why they are still hanging around.

SV...don't know you personally, but having been raised and a lifelong-devotee of this areas surf-scene, I know of you.  I'm a huge fan of KS, and didn't take any offense to your exchange with the King.  Hoping that maybe you fired him-up, or at least gave him some fodder to dwell on re: his equipment.  Anyway, while you may come across as arrogant, I for one, enjoy your creative and corlorful commentary/ posts.  Plus, stirring the pot sometimes helps to keep this place intersting and compelling.  Keep-on keeping on...

I love both of these guys for what they are,,,,, and the Col has a very valid point,,, Slater has always ridin` boards that inhibit him and we all see it... if you`ve ever picked up one of his hand-me-downs you know what I mean...

He loves to push the limits and rides stuff only he can ride,,, he tends to go too low of volume and it shows in quite a few of his results,,, you see him stumble and wish he surfed like he used to, effortlessly, making everything, and making it look easy,,, lots of hiccups lately and miscues.

Todays result at J-bay looked more like it should, nice to see someone take on Ke11y and take on the Colonel.. good stuff I think...

I'll give this to the Col., he told me about Andy Irons over 20 years ago ... at the gas station at 1st street south. I was like, who?
And we all saw what he did, he became one of Ke11y's biggest rivals. In fact, I believe it was AI who inspired Ke11y to return in 2002.
So with that said, he has been known to spot talent.
Like JB, yeah we've seen some of the equipment issues, but while he could ride his front door better than me on my favorite, maybe it could make him think about what he's riding.
In Bill Hartley's prime, he was riding a crazy single fin keel, which inhibited the massive talent he had. Everyone gets quirky.

I couldn't find anything on videos of "the kernel" shredding on the interwebs. Only thing I could find is two photos of him on the late savannahs honepage.

Savannah Bradley. I think her dad used to be a regular on here. She's off to college now or maybe even graduated and on to life after 2ndlight. I think the kernel used to coach her. His judgment is not a reflection of her, she was and still is a good kid/woman.

This whole thread is fascinating and seems to have 2 key parts. First is the obivous component where anyone with an internet link instantly becomes an expert, hurtling advice and insults (both at Slater and Volland) and second is that everyone loves a heel. Even if you don't want to admit it, the jerk has always put asses in seats. We love to hate people and that sells tickets and in this case turns into internet clicks.

Slater was one of the youngest and oldest to win at the highest level and I would bet that even on the boards that he chooses to ride now,  surfs a hell of a lot better than anyone here, me included. Why would anyone care about how he chooses to compete at this stage of his career? He is surfing the heats. Let's not forget that one of the worst things to happen to surfing in the last 30 years was the "contest formula" from the 80's; number of turns + length of ride + groveling = a win. I never want to see that again. It seems like he is fighting the norm and I like that.

Some people are positive and look to make themselves and others better, while others try to bring people down in the mud with them. It is human nature.

I'm a Vulcan talking about Spock. This is high quality stuff. I laughed. As far as legitimate criticism of Kelly's boards or supposed waning talent, it seems like you painted yourself into a corner and are now hoping he loses to justify the whole rant. We have lots of provocateurs on here and Dave nailed it with his assessment. However, I appreciate the creativity in yours. See you in the water where there are no good reasons to provoke anyone.
