The summer of 1972 I was working 3rd shift at Piper Aircraft in Vero. I was doing so good that the real-life-big-time-Plant-Manager came in and gave me a raise to $2.56 an hour! I was eating lunch at the Sea Room every day.

min wage was 1.60 after feb 1971. average cost of 4 years of college was just $409.60? not according to real numbers. avg public school was $1,410. average private 2930. real math, should be 881 hours for public and 1831 for private. not sure why bernie would exaggerate numbers, but his math is off reality

there you go, real cost in real dollars 1971 before any adjustment for inflation or using present day dollars. source for minimum wage here note i am not disagreeing with your premise, just the data. note my post about how many hours it would have taken me had i a useless degree and worked minimum wage to pay it off

No, the higher education system is rigged against working and young people. Higher education costs have gone up more than medical costs. Dems don't scream about that because it is a dem-controlled institution. Now as far as Bernie is concerned, he is a typical prog liar. The minimum wage was around $2.50 when I was in college. No way I could have paid for 4 years of college with $750 dollars. That wouldn't even get me through 1 quarter. for the reasons stated, I have no doubt that a person would have to work more hours now, but 306 hours back in 1975-79 wouldn't have gotten you close. I worked more than that in the average summer.

In 1971 the tuition, fees, room, and board per year for a public 4-year college was $8,734 (procon.org)

Not in VA or NC. That is closer to what VT cost in the 1990s.

The numbers didn't come from Bernie, so ease off the "liar" accusations there FK. Take it up with the National Center for Education Statistics.

College education is "a Dem controlled institution"?

False, and irrelevant. Dems want to stop Bernie as much the pugs.

he isnt entirely wrong. colleges, universities, professors have been mostly liberal for a long time. what has changed more recently is not allowing for opposing viewpoints and debate. sadly this is a disservice because it create close minded adults incapable of free thought

Let's see, the thread's title reads "Bernie says." The SOB is lying. If he is going to use numbers provided by others to make his socialist points, he should check them. I took one look at those numbers and knew they were wrong. Took me all of 2 minutes to find the evidence.

Giving a platform to fascists is not doing a service to free thought.

I suppose you're one of the "fascists vs. anti-fascist" equivalency guys?

It must get uncomfortable sitting on that fence.

Perhaps you're unaware of the alt-right/neofash campaign to wrap their hate speech up as "free speech" and centrist libs wax philosophical about "listening to both sides".

Preach all you want about free markets and love for capitalism, that's fine, but when the Richard Spencers and other nazis want a platform on a campus, you can expect Antifa.

sitting on a fence. ok, buddy but am clearly not on their side. what side are you on? your arent on ours and you aren't on theirs. call it like i see it. my side isnt immune to just criticism just cause it is my side. criticizing behavior that hurts my side should be done by more people. cant pretend to take the high road when traveling the low anymore than you can claim to be against fascism while condoning fascist behavior such as you do

why do you think my comment had to do with fascism? since you brought up fascism, surely you realize restriction of free speech is a cornerstone of it?

306 hours is just working 30 hours per week for one 10-week stretch of summer. Easy peasy. That reflects both college being undervalued, likely a result of supply & demand, as well as larger state subsidies.

Higher costs now are due to higher faculty/staff salaries and fancier buildings, as well as demand (because "everybody" has to go to college now).

Needing 4459 hours nowadays is not bad.

First, that's only 2.23 years (working 2000 hours/year), not a bad time of "indentured servitude" to pay off an investment that will benefit you for a lifetime.

Second, if you're working a minimum wage job after 4 years of public college, you did something very wrong.

If you're making just over 2x minimum wage, say 2.23x to make it round, that's one full year's income. Not too hard to pay that off, along with interest, in 5 years, as long as you're not living high on the hog. Hell, I had roommates until I was 34 just to save a few bucks.

Pretty soon, Bernie and Kamala will join AOC on The Price Is Right, getting it wrong every time.

And here's Joe with a cute photoshop. I would say that the killer in education costs isn't tuition, it's housing. A lot of the kids borrow money to live on because a part time job and full time school is pretty tough if you're studying something serious.

Also Joe you're suggesting that someone can put 100% of their income toward a loan payoff for two years after college? Even 20% off the top toward debt service sounds tough.

I'd rather see us make a public investment in young people and train them for jobs we'll need for the Green New Deal.

I condone fascist behavior? I'm with Debs, "While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free."

What do you stand for? You see the violence in the system and you want to ask politely "please sir, could you be a bit less shitty, if it's not too much trouble. Thank you sir."

you cry fascism while being fully willing to suppress free speech that you dislike. that is a cornerstone of fascism and hypocritical. i too stand against fascism but for freedom of speech. you want to rip apart the government and system. i want to fix it. you want to rip apart our entire economic system and replace it with something proven to fail time and time again, socialism. i want to fix our system by instilling controls, constraints, reducing corporate influence, removing lobbying, etc. so what do i stand for, i stand for this country and its people. that means i am against the horror that is trump and i am against people like you that want to watch it all burn. sure we agree on a good many issues save for these few key ones, we can align with each other against trump, but we fundamentally are different. sure maybe a phoenix will rise from the ashes of what you propose, but probably not. america is worth saving. i would rather rise above and fix things than tear it all down and that begins with each person rising above debasing themselves. it is clear what i stand for, always has been. maybe open your eyes and stop asking stupid questions

You stand for "more of the same" failed neo-lib policies which got us trump in the first place. Fact is, the US is in decline and may be unrecognizable fairly soon, yet you still want to run the same play that failed last time. You should read up on the paradox of free speech. History shows us what can happen when well meaning but misguided centrists ignore creeping fascism.

Vote for Joe, and when you get trump you can come cry about it on NSR.

maybe instead of attacking opposition to trump, you should keep your efforts aimed in his direction. any candidate running on anything remotely close to what you propose would lose in a landslide. you said in the past you are perfectly ok with that too. i dont buy it, nor want it. most sane people wouldnt either. socialism, suppressing free speech, and other things you have mentioned have failed in every culture going back in time. you are selling snake oil. call it milquetoast, white wash, neo-lib, or any other derogatory term (to you) term that you like, but rational, reasonable, doable, and more importantly keeping our country intact is a far better than your brand of nonsense

I agree, a decent politician from either party is much, much more preferable to the 'business man' we have right now. There is a reason that politics is a profession.
