Fed. Commission Finds Staggering Percentage of Fed. Crimes Committed by Illegals

Are illegal aliens just good people searching for a better life, or criminals who bring problems over the border?

That question has been at the core of the immigration debate for years. As with most things, the answer is somewhere in the middle ... but an eye-opening new report makes it clear that illegal immigrants commit far more crimes than many on the left would have you believe.

The United States Sentencing Commission has released its annual report, which digs deep into federal crime data for the 2018 fiscal year. This report is a goldmine of information about offenders at the federal level - and it contains a fact that needs to be seen by every American concerned about immigration.

"For 2017, data from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey shows non-citizens comprise about 7 percent of the country's population, but the 2018 Annual Report and Sourcebook of Federal Sentencing Statistics shows they committed more than 40 percent of all federal crimes," The American Mirror noted.

Indeed, Hispanics are dramatically over-represented in the federal sentencing data, with illegal immigration a major reason.

"In fiscal year 2018, 54.3 percent of all offenders were Hispanic, 21.2 percent were White, 20.6 percent were Black, and 3.8 percent were of another race. Non-U.S. Citizens accounted for 42.7 percent of all federal offenders," the government report said.

"Immigration cases accounted for the largest single group of offenses in fiscal year 2018, comprising 34.4 percent of all reported cases," the government document continued.

Of course, a skeptic might point out that this by itself isn't so surprising. Illegal immigration is a federal crime and widespread, so it makes sense that aliens - many of them Hispanic - receive a high number of federal sentences.
But the numbers show deeply disturbing trends.

It isn't just that aliens are being prosecuted for immigration crimes. Actually, they are also committing many other crimes at an alarming rate.

"Cases involving drug possession, for example, were nearly evenly split between citizens and non-citizens with 361 and 339, respectively," The American Mirror noted. But remember, non-citizens are only about 7 percent of the population.

"In other words, non-citizens violated federal drug possession laws at a rate roughly seven times higher than citizens," [emphasis added] the outlet wrote.

We already know that drug crimes are common near the border, but what do the numbers say about illegal immigrants and other offenses? It's the same story: They commit crimes in numbers far above what you'd expect from the population data.

"Statistics were similar for violations of national defense, with 30 percent of cases involving non-citizens, as well as money laundering at 27 percent, drug trafficking at 24 percent and murder at 18 percent," The American Mirror wrote based on the government report.

And even in the cases when a non-citizen's only crime was illegal immigration, it appears that a high number of them were repeat offenders. At the federal level, crossing the border illegally the first time is a misdemeanor and rarely results in jail time. It is repeatedly re-entering illegally that becomes a felony, punishable by prison.

Yet a shockingly high number of non-citizens were sentenced to prison, which indicates that they were either repeat offenders or committed more serious crimes while also being in the country illegally.

"In the vast majority of cases involving both citizens and non-citizens - 87.8 percent - the offenders were sentenced to prison," American Mirror wrote. "For the roughly 29,000 non-citizens convicted of federal crimes in fiscal year 2018, that statistic was 98.5 percent, according to the report."

What these numbers suggest is that conservatives have been mostly correct on this issue. Even if you set aside the immigration-only offenses, the high rate of lawlessness from noncitizens should be eye-opening.

And it is legal immigrants, including Latinos, who ought to be the most frustrated by this situation. People who ignore America's laws have spiked the statistics to make Hispanics the majority of all federal criminals, tarnishing the reputation of millions of lawful immigrants who try to do the right thing.

Something needs to change. There is indeed a crisis at the border and with immigration as a whole - and pretending otherwise is simply dishonest.

You're whole premise relies on a small set of federal crimes which include immigration violation. Not really. Your own claim has to include immigration in order to make the "staggering number of federal crimes". Then it cherry picks out the federal drug cases which are pre-selected to bias toward border issues and trafficking. That is not a representative picture of average behavior of a demographic. The data collected by the libertarian think tank are much more representative. You'd think that if the illegals were so bad that it would be reflected in the data form a border state.

That would be crimes crossing state lines or otherwise falling under federal jurisdiction. That is a narrow subset of overall crime. That vast majority of crimes are prosecuted in state courts. Illegal immigrants are bound to be a huge proportion of federal crimes since immigration is automatically a federal issue. Look at the raw numbers reported in this federal report and compare to the raw number of crimes in a big state like Texas or Florida. No sure how you missed here that they include immigration violation in their count. That doesn't include all the murder, rape, theft, etc... that is prosecuted at the state level. Yeah. That is expected. uh huh. The City of Cocoa probably has more drug possession case than that in a year. These people are over represented in the federal cases relative to their population size because it is their immigration status that ends up putting them in federal jurisdiction. If you zoom out and look at the whole population that number evaporates. You ought to look up what that means and at what level 99.9% of drug cases are prosecuted. This is dishonest. It makes a blanket statement that they commit crimes far above what is expect from their population data. But then it focuses on a narrow set of federal crimes associated with trafficking. That isn't a generic "they commit crimes". You really need to broaden the database in order to justify such a sweeping generalization. Yeah? How many? 29,000 out of how many million? The conservative Center for American Progress puts the number of non-citizens at 22.6 million in 2017 with 11.1 million of those being illegal. So roughly 0.25% of illegals were convicted of non-immigration federal crimes in 2018 and you are trying to make that as representative of the whole population? I think the approach taken by the non-liberal CATO Institute provides a more representative picture. That's for sure.

Cursory review -

It doesn't contain editorializing to include words such as shocking, disturbing obese, or moronic.

I guess what's staggering is the Feds only sentenced 18.6K cases for drug offenses. Drug possession and drug trafficking sentencing were down. So that is nice.

The sentencing appears to be pretty much the same year in year out. Though immigration cases were up they were still down from the Obama years when judges got tough on immigrants. Read it yourself.

I'm sure most poor Hispanic aliens have really good lawyers so a lot of them beat the rap.

Federal convictions... minus the immigration convictions.................Citizens had 39,458 convictions................out of 248,000,000 about 1 in 6200 citizens had a Federal Conviction in 2018..........................OK.........Non-citizens, not counting Immigration laws...................7,610 convictions.........So the report says non-citizens, I did not see it broken down to illegals and legal non-citizens................So the number of non-citizens is 31,000,000 (19,000,000 legal non-citizens)..............and so the Federal convictions is about 1 in 4080 non-citizens.............OK, so now comes the interesting parts.......................Federal convictions not including immigration............By Race..............Whites 14,100.........Blacks 13,900...........Hispanics 14,500.........other races 2500............How do those numbers figure into everyones belief systems???

There are over 200,000 felony drug trafficking convictions per year on the state level in the US. That's just trafficking and not possession or a myriad of other felonies prosecuted on the state level. That should show you how narrowly your numbers are focused and you should be able to see how focusing on federal convictions biases the numbers towards illegals since that status means that they are disproportionately likely to be in the jurisdiction of the feds and not the state like 99% of the remaining criminal cases.
