This is about today's technology. You should pick up a Scientific American magazine once in awhile. There are a crap load of game changers getting ready to pop. That and the article doesn't include recyclables.

Oh and we currently mine 5 million tons of lead a year.

Copper, 18 million per year.

Zinc, 13.2 million per year.

Aluminum, 45 million per year.

Iron Ore, 50 million by the US alone.

I was right.

Is it being used to shield Nuclear reactors??...................How much copper, zinc, aluminium is used in a wind generator or solar panel???

Oil is fine, climate change is natural and not caused by burning fossil fuels. The solution of green energy will be worse. So much worse that the BIG OIL has developed a team science like experts to come up with new descriptions and reasons why the so called green solutions are worse than our "carbon" problem. Lobbyists, state sponsored infotainment and am radio will help get the word out early, often and over and over and over. Mega dittos beeches.

Humans will make the Earth uninhabitable, the rich know it full well and don't intend to try and stop it. They're looking for a new planet.

They're looking for a new planet...................This is the stupidest thing you ever posted.............On our new planet we will still need lawn boys, gardeners and cleaning women, bartenders and waitresses...................So there is going to be room on the space ships for more than just the rich....................

Idiotic. Is the argument from tspank "Lets not replace fossil fuels (which will kill our planet) with other energy because it will be hard to sustain"?

Nuclear, like Fukushima? This isn't an attempt to solve a problem, it's a cynical invitation to despair and do nothing so that the status who carbon industry can continue to reap their profits without the real price of their product included at the pump.

Pick your poison. You guys are the ones who are staying awake at night worrying about global warming. Nuclear is the most feasible method of reducing carbon emissions without digging up half the planet and covering the other half with solar panels and windmills, bankrupting the world, and destroying everyone's lifestyle. All the same to me though.

...bankrupting the world, and destroying everyone's lifestyle...

This is part you're concerned with, and nothing else. Keep the discounted energy coming! Defer the cost of environmental damage.
Who cares what happens when the bill comes due, that will be the next generation.

My point is that our very existence on this earth at the current numbers is going to cause environmental damage. Given that, some ways of going about things are better environmentally than others. If you really want to eliminate the environmental damage done by humans, knock our population down to 100 million or so. Short of that you have to make choices. Nuclear is the best choice that we have now if your concern is reducing carbon emissions.

How much metal goes into the internal combustion engine for 1 billion cars?

To make alternative power a zero sum game is ridiculous.

Like I said, this is a dumb-ass article.

I would guess that it is less metal than what goes into electric motors and batteries.

You can guess all you want, but after you are done guessing, take a look at internal combustion engines and transmissions, then compare them to electric motors and plastic cased batteries.

Progs want to destroy the environment with their global warming hysteria. Not one of them seems to care that we will have to cover the globe with windmills and solar panels and have to work vast open pit mines to get the materials for all of that. They are dumb, people. Don't vote for them.

Oh, things can be done. I have mentioned some of those things. We can go nuclear, which would help a bit but not ultimately solve the problem unless everyone goes that route. We can wipe out the world's population. Or we can attack China and, if we are victorious, reduce them to a medieval society again. China is the world's largest CO2 emitter, after all, and they aren't slowing down. Anything anyone else does won't make a difference as long as China is chugging along like they are. That is, we can spend the $30 trillion or so and reduce our emissions to zero and it won't make any difference at all. So, which do you choose.

China agreed to reduce CO2 by 60% under the Paris Agreement, but then some dumb ass upset the apple cart.

But the critical dynamic underlying the 2015 Accord, willfully ignored by its advocates, is that major developing countries offered "commitments" for emissions reduction that only mirrored their economies' existing trajectories. Thus, for instance,.......................... China committed ...........TO REACHING......... peak emissions by 2030 ................ - in line with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's prior analysis. India committed to improving its emissions per unit of GDP - at a rate slower than that metric was already improving. President Obama, meanwhile, pledged America to concrete and aggressive emissions cuts that would require genuine and costly change

"Green" may, or may not, "destroy" the Earth.

But, humans have for certain reached a point where possible "fixes" can no longer be "cheap and easy". Perhaps we have come to a nexus of pain and suffering where certain locations/populations will basically come to and end.

Uh huh.
To keep its domestic coal miners employed, China increased its consumption of coal last year for the first time since 2013. As part of its "Belt and Road" initiative, China has plans to build 700 coal-fired electric plants across the Eurasian plain.

The party of the old is on the wrong side of this. The GOP goons are ensuring their fall to WHIG party status.

Ask any young person about climate change. It is real to them and one party clearly considers it important.

Yes, perhaps Trump is not helping anything about this "problem".

BUT, then again, the "problem", and all of its related "issues", has been festering for decades. There is way, way, way, more to it than we can guess. Hell, even Kennedy probably would have been killed sooner if he pressed the "issue" too hard.

I've said before, , , , way-back-when in 1970 at Satellite my year end science project was about energy, the environment and pollution. At the end of my presentation the "smartest" girl in the class stood up and asked me if I was a Communist, because her father had told her that people like me were Communists!!!

the United States contributes just 77,000 tons of plastic to the worlds oceans, which is less than one percent, according to the study published in the journal Science. I was hoping that by banning Plastic straws we could significantly impact our 77 tons but it turns out that a bazillion straws only make up 2 tons of trash. Maybe we should ban plastic soda bottles and plastic clad batteries to effect one percent of the worlds problem?

It is pretty recovered as it is. But, for the things you guys are concerned with, getting rid of humans will help.

"Can you really look them in the eye and say, 'No, sorry, I couldn't do anything because that country over there didn't do anything, so if they're not going to do it then I'm not.' That is shameful and that is cowardly," Margolin (17 years old) said.

The GOP has no problem being cowardly on this and lots of other topics.

NPR story where that quote is from

For instance, Graves agrees with President Trump on the need to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement. Graves told the student organizers the pact allows China to continue emitting more carbon dioxide while the U.S. cuts emissions. "Paris and its related pledges would undermine U.S. competitiveness," his spokesman said........... Graves got immediate pushback from the young activists, including 17-year-old Jamie Margolin from Seattle, who asked how Graves will respond to questions from his children and grandchildren about whether he did enough to address climate change...... "Can you really look them in the eye and say, 'No, sorry, I couldn't do anything because that country over there didn't do anything, so if they're not going to do it then I'm not.' That is shameful and that is cowardly," Margolin said.......... The 17 year old economist? Biologist? Scientist? Oh, activist..... Not only doesn't she know what the Paris reductions would do to our economy, she doesn't care...What I will tell my children and grandchildren is that back in the early part of the century, teenage activists were demanding that we listen to their hysterical demands instead of to Logical economic sense, IF we had listened to the teenagers, NONE OF YOU would ever exist, What the activist also doesn't care about, is that if her demands are met, she will not even have children or grand children to tell her side of the story. After all part of their demands seem to be mandatory sterilization and mandatory population reduction..... I will tell my kids your great-grand father fought the NAZIS, your grand father fought the Communists and all we had to battle were teenage hysterics and socialist all so that you can live free in America...

Is nobodyelse choosing world destruction for a few dollars more? Or is he just angry because he can't get a straw anymore?

Sterilization? Nobodyelse thinks the 17 year old wants to sterilize people? where the f did they get that from?

It also appears they equate working to battle climate change with an assault on "living free" which has got to be one of the more stupid and alarmist arguments out there. A bit too much right wing radio for that one?

We are convinced that liberty without socialism is privilege, injustice; and that socialism without liberty is slavery and brutality -Mikhail Bakunin....................Somebodyelse: So we partially agree with Bakunin..... Liberty can lead to Privilege and injustice and Socialism Does lead to slavery and brutality...............We just believe it is FAR BETTER to NOT have SLAVERY and BRUTALITY........ So when teenage hysterics demand socialist responses to environmental problems and dumb ass internet trolls support them...........We rightly equate the battle about what to do about climate change with an assault on living free...... THAT is the only real argument...... The teenage demands are about and lead to Socialist control, which directly leads to slavery and brutality......

You should read Bakunin and then share your [ahem] analysis.

"It's starting to seem like the both of them are just contrarian-programmed bots"

Nice! But wouldn't a well programmed bot with any dignity shut itself down or self destruct after the repeated shaming and general daily humiliation the botGOP group experiences?

More than likely these bots were developed by C- students with a base program of 1) no fact based intelligence, 2) no AI, 3) a desire to get punched in the stomach and 4) a Life Alert/Ensure user personality.

I think TpaBot is simply programmed to spew silly non-science and FK-esque angry contrarian rambling. It also seems like they programmed in an odd self-fellating/backpatting protocol, perhaps wishfully thinking it might impress someone other than itself(?)

There is no indication that the bot has any introspective ability or subroutines, thus it would just continue on without any inclination as to how it is, in reality, fodder for our ridicule.

Eventually the bot "breaks down" or becomes a self-parody as it gets more and more out of sync with reality- it becomes so out of phase with the current times that its output becomes practically illegible - you can see those effects already happening today.

It never actually stops outputting gibberish until its physical components fry out (not that much longer to go) regardless of how many times it is exposed as a fraud, because it has a predisposed addiction to /desire for the attention of the truly intelligent and human (which it is designed to objectify/dehumanize as "prog" or "liberal" in a self preservation/survival mechanism).

It will endlessly and desperately seek this attention, whether positive or (almost always) negative, until its circuits finally fry due to overexposure of swampy Mims air and it flops over into a heap of pig dung, its hands still plunking out the words "I was right" until the finger gears eventually seize up.

I didn't read any of this thread, nor tpaps article, because the thread title is so fucking stupid.

But I'm now resigned that more nuclear is going to have to be a big part of the green power revolution,

Renewables are the future, but the deployment rate can't be fast enough.
It's too late, we argued and waited too long.

New Nuclear technologies can be far safer than the crap we built in the last century.
We need the next generation of Nuclear power to be starting to deploy in 10 years, and to replace about 50% of fossils in 20 yrs (renewables will replace the rest).

Why not follow the opiate model, make those that lied about this addiction pay for fixing it to.?

Why not follow the opiate model, make those that lied about this addiction pay for fixing it to.? ..................................This is the reason we shouldn't destroy the economy to patch the problem.... WE NEED the economy to produce enough to fix the problem and create the alternatives. How do you build enough nuclear power stations without the tax base and infrastructure that our present economy provides.......All we hear from the liberals is tear it down...stop everything NOW or the world will end............NO...NO... we need the running powerful economy to fix it, to replace it, to clean it up...........Do NOT destroy the only hope we have of fixing the problem.............

What does the truth look like to someone whose livelihood depends on the lie?
