Get a Ford with the door combo lock. It's a convenience you'll grow to love.

To spin of what daner said.

I traded my 2010 4Runner in on a new F150.  Frankly i wish i hadnt.  The 4Runner could secure the boards inside, i could fit a 9ft longboard (itd be on the dash but itd fit), and i could put more on the roof.  I'd lock the fob in it and paddle out with the valet key.  The trail edition had waterproof seats, 4wd with terrain select, and with a few mods the exterior was awesome. It'd also take 2 passengers if the larger portion of the rear seat was folded down.  I loved my 4Runner, i miss my 4Runner.

Now, the truck, can it hold more boards? Potentially, but you need to purchase a tonneau cover, any board racks mount on the bed, nothing on the roof because there's no hardpoints and  mounting clips damage the paint if you use those.   It does fit a 6'4 board across the back but if you do that you can forget about any passengers back there.

So after all my griping, you wonder why i got the truck? I want to get a bigger boat... so its a necessary evil.

So in short, it doesnt have to be a 4R, but i'd recommend an SUV of some sort.

If you have deep pockets Get a new Mercedes Benz Sprinter 4x4 Van.Turbo Diesel with pretty good gas milage You can keep your whole quiver in the Van from 12 foot sup to Boogie and everything inbetween. Can also tow a Boat.  Rig the interior for camping as posh or bare bones as you like.

How do you insure your boards arent stolen with a pick up? I dont see that as good option.  And I too want to tow a boat.  How much is the Benz?

My minivan rocks.

I have hauled up to six boards inside (can fit a 12' SUP inside and close the hatch).

I camped in it a few times.

Only problem....chicks usually swarm me when I stop.

I've been looking too. I have my eye potentially on the Ram 1500, with the largest cab setup (forget what its called). I love being able to throw my boards and wetsuits in the back (have a Frontier now).

Always wondered about the Subaru Outback too.

I love my new Mazda 5 wagon. very stylish. good on gas. good hp. lots of cargo room too. I can carry my boards on the racks or put up to 3 boards inside locked up. I can get a 9', 8' and a 7'6 inside. very nice!

Volvo XC70- AWD, 5 cyl turbo (Fastest Volvo I have ever owned) ((possible oxymoron)) 2015 0-60 stats 7seconds.....fits my 9'6" O'hare and 9'2' Robert August inside, together. I have also rigged a hammock on the inside with parachute cord so I can carry one of my <7" boards with me at all times. I made it so it pulls the board upward tight against the headliner and I can still seat 5 people inside with it in place.  I do get busted by buddys who call it a "grocery getter". Its nice to be able to stop on the way home and lock away the boards if I have too. I did a trip to DC last year and cleaned up on craigslist. Came home with 2 boards inside and 8 on the roof. Two 12' Bote fishing SUPs and 6 boards to fillout the quiver for visitors and grandkids.

If you get the crew cab you can slide them in the back seat at an angle depending of course on the size of your boards.  I have fit 4 shorties in the back of my silvarado with the back seats up.  probably could fit more if needed.  I dont like to leave my boards in the back of the truck for any extended period of time mainly for the sun exposure but day bags make for a nice fix.  Its a 2014 and rides incredibly smooth for a truck.

Get a tundra double cab, tonneau cover, and the verticle opening backwindow.   Can fit many a board inside the cab or lock them in the bed.   The only down side is the 12-13mpg in town and 16-17 on hwy (with tail wind).
