As I was getting out of the water this morning, the Brevard County turtle girls drove by on their ATV so I asked them how many new turtle nests they had found this morning from last night. Can you guess how many? They cover 10 km.

We've been seeing AT LEAST one per day in the backyard recently, so I'll say 30 tracks per km on average and go with same 1/3 ratio for >100 new nests across the 10k stretch this morning.

I'll give it to CERTON because you live to the North of me. I was at the south end of Brevard County and this morning the girls found 80 new nests that were made last night. That is right 80! I couldn't believe it was so high! The reason CERTON is within 5 is because the girls said that they usually find more nests per km in the 10 km sections north of me in Brevard. So 100 is probably very close to what they'd find up there. That is pretty amazing imo.

We're plotting the nest locations in the backyard on a timeline so the kids can try to predict when the eggs will hatch and improve our odds of seeing the hatchlings do their thing again this year. It's really cool to watch if you haven't seen it yet.
And in case you didn't know: "Of the loggerhead nesting activity within the southeastern U.S., about 80% occurs in six Florida counties (Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, and Broward Counties). In Brevard and Indian River Counties, a 20 mile section of coastline from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach comprises the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge (ACNWR), which is the most important loggerhead nesting area in the western hemisphere. Nesting densities of 1,000 nests per mile (625 nests per km) are recorded for beaches within the ACNWR." ------------------------- "Don't count the days, make the days count." -Ali #rydyrstrong |

good thing we have great protection for these amazing animals. In CR, they just collect and eat most of the eggs.
