This video was initially circulated by the Newport Beach Lifeguards almost as soon as they got it, and it followed a couple of paths to the Los Angeles and Orange County media (newspapers, TV), and the National Weather Service provided commentary. NWS, including the Melbourne office, has been providing rip current advisories and monitors beach drownings.

The Fourth weekend was busy in terms of beach rescues (and about ten times as many preventive actions), but it was far from a record-breaking Fourth. For some reason, big south swells seem to plan for the Fourth. 2020 was spectacular.

Here's an Instagram post with the video by The Lifeguard Project. Among the commenters is Dingosaidso, a long-time Wedge videographer.

There's several good Wedge videos from the weekend. This one gives a good sense of the morning gloom, the incoming big ones, and the difficulty of actually riding anything.
