Just can't do it. This was talked about on NPR. "Who doesn't like the boss?" Me. I'm no big Springsteen fan but the movie was great. The movie really explains Springsteen's appeal though. It's just a cute little vignette of how music helps a teen get through tough times while coming of age. Worth a watch. |

The movie was way more about growing up in Thatcherite UK (poll tax riots, the dole, and "Paki go home") than it was about music, though. Well, it was about the music, too, as an escape. It's funny how we embraced the whole 2nd British Invasion culture here while Safraz Manzoor was embracing an American aesthetic as his escape. We've always had a weird relationship with our cousins over there - I guess we never really got over the war.
Speaking of which, Slate did a nifty podcast about the 2nd British invasion a while back, and I was finally able to dig up the transcript of it if you are interested (the podcast itself is better because it's got clips, but there's a link to it at the top of the transcript). https://slate.com/transcripts/...BJV0lDTjZrejJQMldEMD0= ------------------------- [Feminism is] a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians. ~Pat Robertson Edited: 11/26/2019 at 06:02 PM by moody |
