Bad news for me and probably others. The whitefly (Beachside Brevard County) was awful a couple years ago. The last two or three years have been good for not having these pests around. Two days ago I was doing a walk through of my landscaped areas and saw the tell-tale signs of the whitefly on my grandfather palm and a two coconut palms. Yesterday, I noticed the black residue on my vinyl fence, lots of carcasas on the surface of the pool, and swarming clusters of these insects in the front yard. Hate these invasive bugs. Hard to get rid of them and the chemicals needed to kill them are not environmentally safe. Any observations for other forum members and insights for eradication ? Yuk. Whitefly.org A coconut palm across the street from my house was badly attacked during the last big outbreak. |

It was predicted in the original outbreak that some predator would eventually find these whitely tasty, and that's what happened. I expect the same for this smaller outbreak. However, the best way to get a head start is to 'remove' the badly infected leaves, especially on coconuts which they really seem to favor. Spray malathion as a last resort. But usually not necessary if you remove the leaves which have the eggs.

saw a few on my Christmas palms, but not like the last go'round. For whatever reason, our yard seems to attract everything, good and bad in spades. I swear there is an entire community of moles practicing for the big dig in our yard. |

Different pest, but the aphids (I think) that feed on coonties every year before the new flush is due seem best handled by cutting and tossing the leaves. |

Yep, I was taking a closer look at my coconut palms and see they are back. next stop to get some systemic insecticide. I have used the bayer products before that i got at lowes and it worked well but anyone have any other products or options that have worked for them on their coconut palms? Thanks for the heads up ScottR!

May seem obvious, but, if you are using systemics, don't eat the coconuts.

If within reach, and leaves are still healthy, just smash them...wipe them off. Cull the herd.
Dragon flies, wasps, and spiders handled them last time. I refuse to use systemic on anything that flowers and attracts bees and other beneficials. Too short sighted a solution. ------------------------- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate. |

sun harbour is going to sell you the same thing every other store will sell you. Active ingredient imidocloprid. Neonicotinoid that is suspect for being a part of the multi-faceted attack on bees and pollinators since it is systemic and actually expresses in the pollen. Educate yourself on what you are dumping on your plants, earth, and waterways.

I don't know if this will help but I use it on my vegetable for whiteflies. Mix 1 tbs soap with 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake well. Mix 1 1/2 tsp into 1 cup water. Spray top and bottom of leaves early or late in the day.

White fly. Manual removal and/or Soap and oil and wait for predators to do the rest. Excellent suggestion ------------------------- Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind Dr. Suess |

I was admiring some big fat pipe vine caterpillars this morning when I stepped over the red cannas and noticed a cloud come off the cannas. The whitefly plague has found Rockledge. ------------------------- ... |
